Persian shield not bouncing back

Hello all! I am new here and seeking to help one of my plants.

I have a persian shield, and have had it nearly a year now. When I got it, it was about 1' tall. I potted it and have it in a south facing window. The first 6 moths or so went fantastic, and it jumped up to almost 4' tall in a short amount of time, and seemed quite happy.

Over winter, it got fairly chilly (but not freezing). The leaves stopped having vibrant colors, and began to lose foliage and die back. I have heard that they do this when it gets too cold, and that cutting it back would help. I did this, and moved it further from the window to keep it warmer.

Its has been several months, and warming up more and more, and I am just beginning to get some new leaves, but they seem to be getting sad looking at the edges and dying off with some frequency. I have had no vertical growth.

All-in-all, it looks sad.
I was hoping there was something I could do to help it along. I hate to think I am killing what was once such a healthy plant.

Mine has never bloomed...didn't know it could haha. Well I will take cuttings from it as well as the potato vine and I am planning on bringing in the angelonia as it never winters here. I am thinking of covering the whole little back porch by the pool with plastic and making a greenhouse to winter my lemon tree and some other things...my patchouli plant too as it is almost 3 ft high. I need more space...sigh. c

Oh that's fantastic - a fine speci-mine! Love seeing it, glad you found this again, kind of an arcane niche forum. Your plant did a much better job staying purple and retaining leaves inside. I wonder if I'm just leaving these out in the cold too long in the fall. The plant below is about the best looking one I've ended up with from bringing them in many times, in OH and AL. They recover within a couple weeks, with a flush of pretty new leaves, but not easy to look at all winter. Nice size, too! So glad you got roots, I was almost certain you would, as sure as one can be regarding propagating anything. I've kept pieces in water all winter before, but that only means about 3 months here. When it's warm and humid, I just stick pieces in the ground or pots and those almost always take root too, if they don't get too dry. And no way, you do NOT have a spider plant in there - yes you DO! That's too weird. GMTA! Your yard looks peaceful and beautiful, BTW. Haven't seen that spot before, love it!

Hi Have fun with it. One of my favorite plants due to adaptability. Only thing I've found it will not tolerate is drying out. The best color was achieved in dense shade in running water.. There the color becomes so intense it glitters. The more light the paler the color. Even better it can be pruned into any shape form or method. Might add that in that situation it flowered. The flowers are small inconspicuous and stink!!! lol Fortuneately it doesn't flower in most situations lol. It also climbed the waterfall rooting at every node and has proven impossible to remove without destroying the falls. has never become invasive in other situations. In higher light you can get an infusion of a copper bronze color. I even grow it a terrarium and can be kept under 5 inches tall with leaves about a quarter of normal. My kind of plant !!! gary

I moved in last September and the builder landscaper put in varigated liriope and mondo grass that you have. I watered it once a week (when it was newly planted) for 10 minutes during that hot, dry fall we had last year. I don't water it at all any more, haven't turned on my sprinklers since last winter actually. With all this rain we've been getting 15 minutes twice a week is over kill. I also don't maintain them at all. The mondo especially has shot up dozens of healthy little baby plants all over the place. I really need to transplant those things. The liriope has flowers on it now, I didn't even know they flowered. You can trim back the brown leaves if you want, it's a very durable plant. Has to be if it wants to survive in my garden...
