EDUARDA, Very odd that you would mention Antique Roses. This afternoon,I took a frigid stroll out to the mailbox (at the end of the driveway). I think half the neighborhood heard me shriek "Ekkk! OH NO!" when I pulled a copy of the Antique Rose Emporium catalog out of the box. Temptation is everywhere! (Love the photo of Will & Chuck, thanks!) Yes, I mentioned Jude the Obscure myself. I've heard the most glorious praise for this rose and it's scent. Unfortunately it is NOT recommended as hardy for zone 5 by David Austin, AND unlike your lovely part of the world,Eduarda, we get a lot of heavy rain here and Jude balls in the rain. SO he didn't make the first cut. HOWEVER, I strongly suspect that at some point I'll find a place for him close to the house where he'll be protected a bit from the cold and rain. As to the discussion of own root vs grafed. I agree with you Eduarda about the own root being preferable, but as Cziga said, (thanks C )the advice I received from different cold zone and rose forums was that in the case of Austins, go with the grafted. I wrote to David Austin Roses about it and they said that all of the roses they are selling in the USA are grafted. So I'm going with grafted. The other advice was to bury the bud union 4 inches below the soil surface on the Austins for cold climates. Anne & Kent, thanks for the very helpful info on WmS2000 and thorns. Temps here last week were in the 80s, so everything started really popping up and blooms pooping open. Very nice today too. Worked in the garden this morning wearing shorts and a tank top and my favorite flip-flops. So nice. I let My Girls out for an hour this morning to scratch around and eat bugs and grass. They have begun to lay eggs again and need the new grass to stimulate their egg production. They followed me around, clucking happily and singing their little sighing songs. So cute! The Jane Magnolia tree's flower buds have suddenly begun to swell and there are three flowers beginning to open. I sniffed one and oh, that sweet, one-of-a-kind fragrance! The honeybees and Hummingbird moths are out in droves today supping nectar from the purple Henbit flowers in the grass and visiting all the flowering shrubs. I've even seen butterflies for the past two weeks. Tulips preparing to bloom and hundreds of yellow jonquils, daffodils and purple Muscari Grape Hyacinths are blooming. Hostas and Peonies are poking their noses up through the soft earth and looking good. I could go on and on... The weather radio report yesterday predicts there will be lows in the mid-thirties in the next few days, dropping down into the low-20s on Friday night. Ain't that just DUCKY! If that happens, even if it is just for one night or one hour, I will surely bid a fond but sad farewell to most, if not all, of this year's spring flowers. .I can just kiss the Apricots goodbye...again...for a second year. It will spoil all the new tender growth on the roses and send all the little seedlings popping up in the garden to coldest Purgatory, Glad I didn't set out the Cole crops and onion sets. Unreal

Today I recieved my rose order from ValleyK Greenhouses. They pack their roses so much better than Cedar Hollow. Each rose was wrapped in cardboard and they sent 10 roses in 3 boxes so they were easier to handle. They are bigger than the ones that I recieved from them last year with the exception of 2 Marie Bugnet which are quite small. I had a broken rose in this shipment too, but it only broke off half way. There is still leaves left on this rose.That is the only damage from shipping that I can see on this bunch. They look much nicer than my Cedar Hollow roses which are stripped of so many leaves. But one the plus side, most of the roses from Cedar Hollow are srouting out new leaves. I also recived my plants from Dominion House today. I had ordered a bareroot Kaleidoscope. The stem is huge!!! It is starting to send out leaves as well. I ordered some lilacs, clematis, lilies and perennials from them as well. The lilacs and clematis are fine, the lilies are a bit shrivelled, and the perennials are sick. I'm sure some are dead. Honestly, I don't know if I would order perennials from them again. Roses, I would though. I think that they were in the boxes for quite a while, there is lots of white growth. I moved a 5 yr old JP Connell the other day in the rain. It should have been moved sooner because it had flower buds on already. It is really sulking. Oh well, If it doesn't make it, they are easy enough to find to replace. I have quite a few of my older roses with flower buds on. It won't be long before the roses start to bloom!!!! Shelley

One is more beautiful than the next. Impossible to pick a favourite. Your SR IS much darker than those I saw at Lowe's which weren't fragrant either. Is yours? I hope so, as I'm growing one and would like another if it's that gorgeous colour.

Gorgeous!!! Your Enchanted Evening is sensational!!! So many flowers!!!

I just got Zaide bare root, so I haven't seen any flowers yet...yours looks awesome!! I'm really glad you showed your Zaide! What do you think of the fragrance??

April, they're gorgeous, I don't think I could choose a favorite. There's so many blooms, I'm really amazed at all that beauty!

Vaporvac, I think it's possibly the lighting making it appear darker. I think it's probably the same shade as yours. Mine is very fragrant. I purchased them last year and they hardly bloomed all summer but this spring they've been nothing BUT blooms. I'm loving them!

Carol, I love love Zaide. She's an amazing bloomer but I can't detect much fragrance. im all about blooms though and fragrance is an added bonus if they have it :)

Lots and lots of lovely pink roses. Heritage, Scepter'd Isle and Wild Eve are especially fine!

Ooops!! I'm all about the fragrance!! LOL But she may have more fragrance in our cooler weather - you never know. I'm glad she's an amazing bloomer!!! Mine (bareroot) still doesn't even have leaves - I have a long wait. :)
