Have your painted cabinets chipped & how long have you had them?
Comments (1)My Plain & Fancy cabinets are 10 now. Factory spray painted. This Old House did a show on P&F focusing on the painted surface which seems to be especially durable. On the show they were installing white cabinets. Mine are a butter color. The only areas of wear is on the edge and knob of the garbage pull out and on the handle of the dishwasher -- I had purchased a handle from Lee Valley and sent it to them for spray painting. This is wear and it's the type people pay to get on painted furniture. No chipping whatsoever and no separation in the seams either. We are in upstate NY so we have similar temperature extremes as New England. No idea if P&F has changed their manufacturing in the last few years. There was a poster on here with a huge rant on them but I've been very happy with the quality. Kompy, who's a KD, did a gorgeous white kitchen a year or so ago with P&F. You might consult her as well if they interest you....See MoreHow long have you had your pool? and ...
Comments (15)My parents first house was next to a creek that we played in all summer long. At the next two houses my dad built small ponds. The year I graduated from high school they built their last house and put in a 20x40 gunite pool. We hung out there alot during and post college years because of the pool enviroment. After being in the business for 6 years and still single, I bought my first house that was next to a creek and immediately put in a monster pool. 37x54 fiberglass wall/concrete bottom with two adjacent wooden hot tubs. I dug it as deep as my backhoe could dig and ended up with 12.5 feet. I had 24ft vac poles and it was a chore to keep it clean but we had some incredible parties that I will never forget. 5 years later I was married with kids on the way and the bachelor pad turned into the young family entertainment center. The parties continued albeit in a different style. We didn't have cable so the kids spent most of their time in the pool. It was the go to place in the summer so there were lots of friends for the kids and mothers to keep my wife happy. 14 years and 4 kids later I bought a house from a pool customer in a more suburban enviroment with better schools. The pool is much smaller (18x40)and much easier to care for. We added a fiberglass spa. because of the pool our house was still the go to place for the kids and their friends as they grew up. My wife loves having them all around and knowing all of their friends. Two kids have graduated from college one is attending and the youngest still has those great formative years of high school ahead. Hopefully the pool enviroment will have the same impact on his life that it did on the other three. Grandchildren are next but hopefully not too soon?...See MoreHow long have you had your flat screen tv?
Comments (18)So, maybe to clarify...Our smaller tv (~10 yrs old) gets lots of use. It is on from about 5-10 pm at minimum on weekdays and more on the weekend. The larger tv doesn't get quite as much use, but it still gets a fair amount. That is about 26,000 hours (I rounded to 50 hours for the weekly average) on the smaller tv in the 10 years. I do not know what is considered average or expected for the life of a flat screen, but I just looked for an answer and the plasmas are supposed to last 100,000 hours and I expect the LED/LCD are similar. That is a lot of tv watching. If we get 100,000 hours, that would mean about 40 years! Four years does not seem like very much time. I would be very unhappy....See MoreWhat were some things you just had to have in your house?
Comments (21)I have two dream homes. One is on my family's lake property, which is small, is on the south side of the lake, and is on Minnesota, so severe winter is an issue. There, I want low maintenance, energy and space efficient, good cross ventilation. An open floor plan with informal dining. A screen porch with a sun deck above. Main floor bedroom and laundry. Probably floor heat under Marmoleum in the living space, to accommodate wet, sandy kids coming out of the lake. It needs to be two-story, because of the small lot size. The lot is level, and I don't want steps; the basement will be storage and storm shelter, but not living space (no windows to speak of). Upstairs, I want bedrooms for guests, and an open area overlooking the deck for a game table - my family loves board games and jigsaw puzzles. My other dream home is in the woods somewhere, more of a cozy cabin - though not log. I love the look, hate the maintenance!...See More- 10 years ago
