You would have to have all the materials purchased and on-site. A complete plan, and have all the trades people lined up, and you need to get it inspected - several times. My guess - 3 weeks.

Ours took 9 months of DIY. It was the only bath on our main floor. The key was keeping the toilet connected as much as possible, which meant going through a couple of wax seals. DH and I took showers in the basement. I bathed our kids in the laundry sink or kitchen sink (5 years old, LOL) We washed hands in the kitchen sink.

By contrast, our neighbors' hired a contractor and theirs took a couple of weeks - we gave them a key and they used our basement shower each morning. I set out a drying rack for their towels and let them keep their soaps here. They gave us a nice restaurant gift certificate when all was done.

We're going on 6 weeks. There's always something that goes wrong. We were prepared and had everything on site but still things always pop up.

My GC said 4-5 weeks, so my big dog and I moved into a friend's condo with her and her 2 cats. 2 weeks in, they were clearly nowhere close and they provided a schedule showing not done with the bathroom for 8 weeks! My sweet friend said no problem although the animals were driving us both crazy. Then we got to 6 weeks, it was pushed out more, and I said I need to get back in my house.

At that point there was a tub with running water, and a toilet within a few days. Several times they had to remove the toilet for tiling or other work, so I used their porta potty outside, then eventually bought this camping toilet to use at night. I showered at the gym.

My project included reframing most of the bathroom walls and relocating the fixtures, in conjunction with a kitchen remodel. Much more than simple bathroom remodel. If I did it over, I would have insisted on seeing their schedule before starting work. I think the GC gave me the initial estimate without actually crunching the numbers, and I think they could have done more to prioritize the bathroom completion first (as opposed to the kitchen work, which was lower priority).

We have 4 full bathrooms in the house, so we have never had to do without when renovating them! We are on our last bathroom remodel and we are at week 7, and this is with a very organized, very detailed and perfectionist GC who is here working full days every weekday. We are probably 2 weeks out from completion with a few dead days due to waiting to template for counter after vanity is in.

One bathroom house. Remodel was a total gut involving some fixture moves, and a custom shower. Work done by an excellent GC that I had worked with before. Can't remember the total time it took (I've blocked it out) but at least four weeks.

I lived in the house the entire time. I used the kitchen sink for most things requiring water. I showered at the gym. The toilet was working for all but a few days, but it wasn't accessible during work hours because -- workers. I knew the location of every toilet in my neighborhood (hint: supermarkets are open long hours).

On the days the toilet was out of commission I spent as much time as possible out of the house. Late at night I went to the gym for a last pee. Early morning I threw on some clothes and made a beeline to the market or coffee shop. Kept a jar in the basement for emergencies, which I have to admit happened a couple of times late at night.

Sorry if this is TMI, but you'd better be prepared. Start hunting for those bathrooms now! Good luck on your remodel.

everything on-site from the get-go ... complex/comprehensive tile work ... 9-10 weeks no use, 11 to completely finish

Many years ago, but we were 4 1/2 weeks. We had greatly underestimated the length of time with no plumbing in the only full bath that house had and had planned to stay in a cheap hotel. That lasted one night. One uncomfortable night ;0) In fairness, it was more than a gutted bathroom. The contractor moved the W wall of the house out 8' to expand the cramped bathroom and add needed closets, more windows to two bedrooms.

My SIL and her husband were leaving the next day on their boat for a month and we moved into their house a few blocks away. Two days after they returned, we moved back home. I still didn't have a vanity top or sink faucets, and had temporary hot/cold control valves in the shower since those I'd chosen hadn't come in.

A friend had written into her contract that no work was to begin until all elements of her kitchen were present. Older and wiser, I wouldn't consider otherwise now either.

Ten weeks that we couldn't use it. Then some finishing touches, but that was on me - couldn't decide where to put the towel bar, whether to have shower door or a curtain - decided on doors, but one door came in damaged, so there was a little more wait to get it replaced.

But we have 2 bathrooms on the floor, so we just used the master bath. Now we'll switch and use the new bathroom while the master is done.

Usually it should take no longer than a 3 - 4 weeks.
