Need help repotting aloe vera plant

me me

I potted an aloe vera plant with John Innes number 2 and perlite and the plant turned brown so I went and bought cactus compost that contains peat and wood fibre but the plant haven't improved but I think this is due to the soil holding to much water so I plan on repotting it again but should I use the cactus compost or the john innes but this time should I add sharp sand and add aquarium gravel as I don't like the perlite. Also should I add gravel to the bottom of the pot and should I be watering the plant after repotting it.
