I would feel more comfortable in the before home.

I like the lighter, brighter "after", but the white couch is a non-starter with dogs.

I think I would have liked the 'after' all the Wythe Blue, with the old curtains and a leather sectional. Not sure about the new rug.

I prefer the before picture although I think there is too much brown furniture and I don't care for leather. It looks homey and cozy, and the after says "I'm fashionable but have no individuality", and the wainscoting is rather strange. I don't care for all that white furniture and that rug is seen everywhere ad nauseam. It looks like an ad for Crate and Barrel or any number of similar places. A home should have some sort of individual character, where you can almost visualize the person who lives there. Even the first room needs some books strewn around and a bowl of colorful fruit or a throw, and some sort of art that catches the eye.

Before, definitely. The "after" room furniture and decor has a temporary kind of feeling and not great quality. And, as much as I like shopping at TJ Maxx, it looks like everything in the room came from there rather than my preference for rooms that appear to have been compiled over time.

I don't care for either room.

I like the concept of the "after". The "before" is too dark and brown for my taste, but the "after" looks like a show house. And though I like wainscoting, it's not working for me in that room.

It looks like a Chip and Joanna job. The shiplap wainscoting is the giveaway.

However, I would have kept the leather sofa and prefer "no TV" in the living room. Don't care for the wainscoting or the new curtain color.

Before looks like a family room.

I'd like to see them both taken with the same photography, the lighting is so different in the two and it's not just because of the white sofa.

The lighting is part of what interests me I think. The before has a more inward feel, and I think that's a result of the decor but also the photographer's lighting choices. A person who lives in the 'before' has a different view of the world and thinks of herself differently than the one who lives in the 'after.' The 'after' looks like it's prepared for a camera and the windows are open and light but you can't see the outside. It might as well be a stage set with floodlights outside of it. The before looks like a place where you could think and reflect. It's a shelter but a shelter within nature. You can see the trees. There are flowers in the 'after' but they're there to match the pillows and the birds on the wall are plaster.

Indygo, your observation is very thoughtful and caused me to look again. I prefer the "after" because of the light and airy ambience.

I can't choose one because I don't care for either. The first pic is so dark that it's hard for me to see much detail (looks like some of my phone photos), and although the second is lighter the room lacks soul, as does the first.

I could work with the idea of either, but I woudn't want either as is.

I think there is a huge difference in the photo quality and the furniture layout as much as the decor style. I prefer the after, although I don't love it either. The changes I like are the wall color (really do not like the "before"), the room layout with more appropriate size and placement of furniture.

I've had a white slipcovered sofa and yes, it is hard to keep clean - our cats were not the problem but rather the human "imprints"! Throws were necessary.

In the after I am not fond of the curtains - the color and texture doesn't seem right. The wainscoting seems unnecessary and the room would be better off without it.

The before lacks contrast and looks like a big block of brown to my eye. That said both versions of the room look above average in attractiveness, to me.

Neither. But the first one has three elements I like more: the rug, the rocking chair, the stove. The second one has nothing that I find interesting or inviting.

I don't think it means that I'm officially old..it means I'm arrogant enough to believe I'd do a better job. LOL.

Love the after!

If the 'before' was better lit, it changes the look quite a lot.

The before just looks old to me. I like the freshness of the after, but not the individual elements - no white sofas for me, and I don't think the drapes look good with the rest of the room at all (neither fabric nor color).

Edited to add:. I just looked at the above better-lit version of the before room, and it's MUCH more inviting!

Edited again to add - I just showed the before picture to DH, and he said it would look much better if the lighting were brightened - smart guy.

I slightly prefer the 'Before' look, for a main home. Although I'd change some of the decor choices, it does seem more 'homey.' I'd only prefer the 'After' look, if this home was a beach house or cottage. Something about it just doesn't seem warm enough to be a room I'd want to sit in, for a long period of time, or on an every day basis. It seems like the surrounding property (maybe a lake or lovely hiking trail) might be the real draw, so the decor desire was 'airy' over 'warm/homey' IYKWIM.

The before screams the room hasn't been updated in decades.

With the after, I like the furniture placement and the lighter colors.

But the elements don't work together for me. I especially dislike the cool blue of the rug, with the warmer shade of the blue paint. The wainscoting makes no sense to me, and the birds and curtains need to go.

Liking the gold & aqua of 'after', not the periwinkle rug & white sofa; both look like design mish-mashes to me, to be honest. I would've kept the leather furniture for sure & having a lot of blue green & cool blue together looks just weird...

The asymmetrical heights in the wainscoting in the after is really bothering me. So is the cookie cutter wall birds. I've seen those dang birds everywhere lately. The after needs more personality - it looks like a furniture showroom re-enactment. Also, white couches in a home named '4 generations under one roof' is an oxymoron. I'd like to see how those white couches and cream rug look after diaper changes, juice box squirts and coffee and tea drips on it. Maybe I'd prefer the couches from the before in the after room (without that awkward wainscoting placement) to give it a more inviting look. And without the birds. It just needs to look more cozy and not like a crate and barrel catalog page.
