JM leaf scorch, wind, and sun

So my wife and I decided to dive in and purchase a Shirazz. It did well the first year until summer and then began losing leaves. At first we thought it was scorch from rain followed by sun on the leaves. However as the summer progressed it became clear that the JM was also drying out from the intense sun. Eventually it was moved to a more protected area and hopefully will come back this year.

Wind seems to be a constant here in mid Ohio. With gusts over 50mph easily 20 or so days a year.

My question is there any JMs that are more tolerant than this? I was told Shirazz is a full sun JM. But I am guessing the other factors (wind, rain w/ sunshine) play critical roles in health.

We would like an autumn moon or orangeanelo for the front to replace the Shirazz. Any suggestions?

The leaves will not recover but it is very strange for them to scorch like that. Of course, as Jean pointed out, their root system is quite limited now. But in time, they should be able to do better. For example, my hydrangeas have had to endure a month of 100 degree summer weather in some years but they did not scorch.

JM, is there one that can take full sun all day?

I'm not worried about the JM being subjected to the cold here. In my 6 years here in the Denver area, I can tell you that it's been below zero only a handful of times. And never has it been below -10. My biggest worries are the intense sunshine (300 days of sunshine here is not uncommon), the late winter to early spring snow storms that dump lots of wet, heavy snow and the freezing that come right after 3 days of 70deg. temps (it's snowed here just two weeks ago), the hard, clay soils that hold moisture, and the occasional winter winds that can be strong at times with some winter storms. Some of those problems can be alleviated somewhat. I can dig down a few feet and amend the soil. I do have a fenced back yard, and living in the suburbs the neighboring homes are close, so that can protect from the wind somewhat. And I can always build a windshield to put up in the winter. However, I cannot protect against the sunshine. The only way to do that would be to build a shelter of some kind that could filter the sun, however that is against my community architectural guidelines, so that won't be happening. If I could guarantee that the JM wont die because of exposure to the sun, then I will have no problem planting one. But so far I haven't been able to determine if the sunshine would be too much, or just cause leaf scorch in the late summer.

Hey Spacehog I am just southeast of you. My Jap Maples still look decent but ready to go into scorch, my Crimson Queen is newer and has gone fairly green so scorch is next. Most of my perennials and flowering shrubs are scorched so I will not be surprised about anything else. Between the 100's weather and constant 90's otherwise and lack of rain, we are prone to it. The difference is for anything newer, I would water atleast twice per week during the 90's on anything newer if not more, which is what I am doing. Cher

Thank you, after reading giving comment I quickly ran outside and cut off the damaged leaves. I fear it is sunburned as well. I bought them from Home Depot (Bonnie plants).i will move them tomorrow to a part shade area during the hot times. It shouldn't be very hot tomorrow with temps going up to only 74. I checked my tomato plants as well and they are not as burned but I can see that they were a little scorched as well.

I don't know of any Japanese maple that can handle the wind better than the others. Your Shirazz should withstand the wind and sun better when the rootball is larger. Keep it moist and give it time. It has a small rootball relative to the foliage in the picture. That might take several years to even out depending on it's present location and watering schedule.

I would not recommend any of the reticulated or variegated forms for a full sun location. The foliage on these types will be very sensitive to a lot of sunlight and leaf scorch is commonplace. Same with Autumn Moon, as the very pale gold foliage is also prone to scorch in full sun. All of these types would appreciate at least dappled shade or protection from intense afternoon sun. That is even the case here in the PNW (pretty far north!) where our summer sunlight is not as intense as deeper into the 48 states nor is it as hot. But the Orangeola should be fine with adequate watering.

btw, the water on foliage being burned by the sun thing is just a wive's tale. That is not a cause of leaf scorch. But excessive sun can be!!

I live in the central Arkansas region. It's not always windy, but it can get quite windy at times. This hasn't affected my 'Shirazz' at all. Mine isn't nearly as leafed out as yours, and it can dry out quite fast in full sunlight. I just step up my watering it, so that its soil doesn't dry out. It sits in full sunlight all year long and does perfectly fine. Just so long as I don't let it dry out for any prolonged period of time. I've also sprayed down the leaves with water in full sunlight. I don't do it all the time, just whenever I feel the need. This never negatively affected its leaves either. I also agree that that's just an old wive's tale. Gorgeous trees you've got there. Just keep it from drying out, and it should do just fine in full sunlight.

Thanks everyone! I'll keep watering it sounds like the root ball is just a little small for the tree itself. I have a gator watering system I may hook up for overnight and into the day watering.
