Comments (33)Hard decisions, huh? I don't know where you can buy zoysia plugs though except for one place online (Empire and El Toro but is it worth it?). The best ones are sold by half pallet or full pallet (450 sqft). I like Palisades zoysia the most (more than st augustine that I grow now) but like bermuda, they will take over plant beds, etc and it would require expensive barrier to keep them out. the biggest pluses is that they have better shade tolerant and requires far less mowing and fertilizing. I had planned on getting them but I balked because I had no confidence that it could keep compete with bermuda but it's a moot point anyway. It will still invade st augustine lawn. I planted a lot of trees so that will help st augustine compete with bermuda with no problem as it was obvious at my mom's when maintained the right way....See MoreHow to kill a fig tree?
Comments (3)David: You are right, most here couldn't kill a fig. But I once lived near the worthless wild kind and I'm not a fig lover unless they're dried! Anyway, I'd try a very heavy dose of Roundup applied to the foliage when the tree is growing rapidly. After the leaves fall off, cut the top down. Wait if you can to see if the tree sprouts back from the ground. If so wait until it gets a foot or two tall and spray again. That will likely do the trick. If there is no sensitive vegetation nearby, adding some 2,4D to the Roundup would help. The Fruitnut...See Moretriclopyr to kill saw palmettos
Comments (1)Wouldn't it be better to kill the skunk vine rather than the highly desirable, native, saw palmettos which could be incorporated into the background for your shrubs. The saw palmettos are so slow growing that hardly any maintenance is needed with them. The smaller native birds such as cardinals, cat birds and painted buntings like to take refuge in palmettos and I have seen cardinals eating the seed when ripe. Saw palmettos make a great screening plant too and add to a tropical look when other shrubs are planted in front of them....See MoreWeed killer that doesn't kill plants and trees
Comments (11)Here's the rub: weed killers - herbicides - can't distinguish between a weed or any other sort of plant, many of which are desirable in the garden. At most, they will target specific plant types but not necessarily individual plants. Weed killers used on lawns typically target boadleaved weeds, leaving the turf grass/lawn alone. Using the same weed killer in a planted area with flowering plants, annuals, perennials etc. runs the risk of killing those plants as well, as the herbicide only recognizes them as broadleaved. Using any sort of herbicide in a non-lawn planted area is risky. Really only the ones that target monocots or grass-like (single bladed) plants are safe. Your options are to remove any weeds in these areas manually, burn them off individually (and very carefully) with a weed torch or smother them. Once the weeds are removed, mulching will help to keep them under control but nothing will keep them out forever....See More- 10 years agolast modified: 10 years ago
