Giant Chocolate Chip Cookie

Who originally shared the recipe for the Giant Chocolate Chip Cookie? Anyhow, I have made it several times, and have one freshly baked to take to my sister today. She is very, very slowly recuperating from a replacement of a replaced hip. She needs some cheering up, so I thought a visit, out to lunch and this cookie would do the trick for an afternoon.

I just looked up the recipe fro a past post. It sounds like a good idea. I may make it later.

Big Big Cookie
Cream together:
1/2 c butter, melted and cooled
1/2 c light brown sugar, packed
1/2 c white sugar

Stir in and mix well:
1/2 tsp vanilla
1 egg

Combine:
1 1/2 c flour
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking soda
And mix into batter.

Fold in 1/2 c chocolate chips.

Place a sheet of foil on a pizza pan, large tart pan, or large cookie
sheet or baking pan. Dump the batter into the center and pat into a 9
inch, evenly flat cookie. It will spread to 11 inches as it bakes.

Bake in a 350 degrees pre heated oven for 13-16 minutes (mine baked
19 minutes). Let cool completely on the pan. Lift from the pan by
lifting the foil.

It is so easy to make, quick and no fuss. Just mix in a medium bowl with a rubber spatula, plop on lined cookie sheet, shape with hands by patting it into a circle, and bake. It tastes better the next day with the shorter baking time.

Those are absolutely gorgeous, bons! I made some last week also, and I have to agree they're some of the best CC cookies I've ever tasted. I used Ghirardelli 60% chips instead of the disks, and I aged the dough for about 50 hours before I had a chance to bake them. I've got eight cookie balls packed in a vacuum-sealed bag in the freezer, because we couldn't eat all those huge cookies in a single week. I'll be interested to see how they hold up when I defrost and bake. But this is now a go-to recipe. I'm another weirdo who prefers them cooled to warm out of the oven. I like that little nugget of firm chocolate instead of the hot ooze. This is probably a subject more suited to the therapist's office, though.

We are a major chocolate chip cookie family here. I have tried only a few recipes but vary some things within the same recipe on the back of the Toll House bag or Tate’s cookies recipes. I used to cream the butter and sugar and hold it over my gas burner a little to melt the butter slightly but not all the way. It made for a flatter, crisper cookie. My one trick that seems to get the highest marks from people is to take the cookies out of the oven around the 8 min mark and bang them on the counter. Then continue cooking for another min or two. This makes for a chewy yet flat cookie The Tate’s recipe uses dark brown sugar, dark choc chips and salted butter and slightly less flour than Toll House. They are very good as well. I like the dark or bittersweet chocolate. Also cooking on parchment paper is super easy and quick as well and makes for a crisper cookie bottom as well I get the next batches ready while the first batch is cooking. Then slide the cooked batch off the sheet pan and slide the new one on. I made 18 dozen cookies once in less than 90 mins.

Yes, and it rises to become another one to two inches wide. So adjust according to your cookie sheet, especially if they are like mine with no sides.

If your pan has a diameter of 11 or 12 inches, it would work.

Just showed my young adult son to make this with refrigerated cookie dough. Cheaper than purchasing ready-to-eat from the grocery store bakery.

I made a lot of giant chocolate chip cookies over the years. They were easy to make and decorate with frosting for an unexpected "special" occasion. Although it went against my sensibilities that it took a whole recipe of cookie dough for one cookie (LOL). I have a special pan for mine, which has a higher rim on the pan than a pizza pan does.

For someone recovering from surgery, I'd also make up a batch of bone broth (beef or chicken - http://www.westonaprice.org/health-topics/broth-is-beautiful/) and take them a couple quarts of that and suggest they drink a cup with each meal. Recovering from surgery requires lots of additional protein in your diet.

There are also lots of fun things you can make with unflavored gelatin (including a fudge-like goodie) that would also be beneficial for additional protein and collagen, and a fun food for recovery, if you need another food idea.
