Deborah Maple Tree (Common Name: Norway maple)

I said that I would not have a Maple Tree will this morning I got word that a friend got me a Deborah Maple Tree which is a Common Name: Norway maple can anyone tell me if you have a Deborah Maple Tree and what is your thoughts of this tree?

They told me that the tree gets red leaves in the Spring and change to green in the summer and then change color in the Fall. Does this tree have Helicopters in the Spring?

Does this, Maple tree split in the Winter time on the Southside of the tree from the sun?

The only thing I know about it is that i will not have helicopters in the spring. If it is a norway maple it might have them in the fall, but not in the spring.

Norway maples are not native and are considered invasive. Their leaves come out far earlier than all other trees, and stay on far longer in the fall, thus depriving the understory of wooded areas the light they are used to getting when rest of the trees have shed their leaves. If you really like the helicopters get a red maple or sugar maple.

'Deborah' comes out red and then goes greenish, so maybe that is actually your red one - unless both are red at this time. Hopefully your "strong composy material" was used as mulch and did not go into the planting hole, that would not help the trees. To repeat what has been said a number of times before, there are Red Maples (Acer rubrum) in varying cultivars and then there are other cultivars of maples whose leaves turn red in the fall. There are also maples, mostly Japanese maples but other species as well, whose leaves come in red or reddish, some of whose leaves stay red and some turn green. The TRUE Red Maple is the A. rubrum, so called, as far as I know, because the flowers, which are very early before the leaves, are very red, as are the early stages of the samaras. Any other tree, if of another variety of maple (Norway, silver, etc.) MAY have the word red somewhere in its name, or have red leaves all summer or in the fall, but it will NOT BE a Red Maple, although it may be a red-colored maple, for example, the above mentioned Crimson King Norway Maple. Sorry for the lecture, but it's a pet peeve, and so you got the rant....

Wait a few days after this heavy rain goes through so the clay will drain. In my area, four days will be enough to dig. Then dig your hole about 3 feet in diameter and about one foot deep. Dig wide but not particularly deep. Most things I read recommend using only native soil as back fill so that the roots will find their way out into the surrounding ground easier. Personally, I always put a bag of composted manure over the area that I am digging, then dig and mix, dig and mix the area, working the manure well into the soil that will become back fill; remove the soil from the hole area, remove all wrappings around the tree's root ball and set it in the hole with the dark area of the trunk (indicating the top of the soil line it was at before) about an inch higher than the soil level you are putting it in (really important in tight clay); then back fill with the soil you removed from the hole, firming it around the roots as you go. Water it in well, apply a good mulch like pine straw. And that ought to do it. By planting now or soon, you are giving the roots a chance to settle in before next summer's heat arrives. I must say I am not familiar with this particular variety of maple and maples, in general, are not always successful here in the Deep South. Red Maple and certain Sugars are, though. Research it on the internet or through the Southern Living Website. It is awful to dig a beautiful hole and then lose the tree because you picked the wrong kind.

I checked the Extension site, and discovered it might be "Frost Crack". What's been said above is all correct. In any case, 'Deborah' is a rather nice cultivar of a tree-Norway maple-that we, or at least I, just can't recommend anymore, due to both its invasiveness-a real problem-and its tendency to develop girdling roots-as all Norway maples which have been transplanted seem to do eventually. This significantly shortens their useful lifespan. In all other respects, a decent tree.

I do not like the helicopters at all, the Deborah Maple Tree is a cullaval of the Norway Maple, not a Norway Maple.

norways also tend to have surface roots.. down thru the decades.. and with their very dense canopies ... might cause nothing to be grown under them ... including potential inability to grow grass ..

keep in mind... i am talking 20 to 40 years from now ...

also keep in mind.. you can always plan on removal ... somewhere down the line ... my usual deadline was the season i could take it down for free ... as my drop dead decision season ...

my favorite trick.. is to google up the latin name ... and then read up. AND .. flip to google images ... to SEE ... the future ... your reliance on common names ... is part of what is holding you back.. to get good info ...

PS ALL trees can split on the sun side in winter.. its more a function of proper planting .. and proper after care ... and maybe some winter protection for the first few years.. rather than a trait of a given tree ... in other words.. its a stress reaction ...

PPS: it would be nice.. to know more about your whole property and goals and stuff ... you have done quite a few posts here .. and frankly.. i hope you have some acreage .... maybe you addressed this in some other post.. or maybe you could start a new post on the whole process ...

Note to John near (but evidently not in) Toledo-cultivars-which is the word you were looking for-are also whatever species of tree they were developed from. That is, a cultivar of in this case Norway maple is still a Norway maple. I think I covered that up yonder, but there seems to be some confusion.

If you don't like the helicopters - samaras - then you don't want a maple because they will all produce them at some point in time and to some degree. Some types of maples a lot more freely than others.
