Mini gnome and hosta garden
Comments (3)Neat presentation! You have the scale of the gnome just right for those tiny hosta. Since I keep mine in pots, the minis need special consideration. So I keep multiples in wide bowls where I can cluster 4 or more together with a watering source in the middle. Last winter I lost several of the small guys because the pots dried out too badly and the squirrels dug into the soil and the crown dried up. Using the super hot cayenne (90,000 heat units) works to keep out the squirrels, but it sometimes makes a mess of the plant and potting mix. Whatever works, I use it. And, when a bowl is looking really fine, I bring it up to the deck to display beneath the umbrella-covered wrought iron table. Best way I can figure to watch Tiny Tears open those teensy flowers, which are precious! Looks like you have room for more minis in that spot....See MoreMini Hosta Garden Tour
Comments (12)OK, just where in Northern IL are you all? I'm in the north central part near Ottawa IL. I'm probably still quite a bit south of everyone? Wish I was closer. I would really love to have some Hosta pals and I surely would have loved the "tour". I'm stuck here in the middle, to far north for the central IL Hosta society and too far south of you all....Wahhh! Thanks for sharing all the pics though, it was a real treat to see you all and your beautiful gardens. Janet (in no man's land)...See MoreHosta Mini 2014
Comments (45)I am enjoying the great display of Mini's. I especially love McTavish's huge collection displayed with all the rock accents. Very nice. I was surprised to see how unusually tall the flowers were on Peren.all's Blue Mouse Ears. Comments (9)Thank you both. I do have a fence. Deer are not the problem. It's the small buggers. I have done everything in my life to catch, trap, shoot, deter these plant eating, tick carrying pains in my butt. I have stopped growing things I have no control over and started going weekly to the farmers market. Somehow, shopping for local organic veggies is much more relaxing than finding my plants eaten by rodents. I'm tired. I have to get an electric fence out there. The fence I have has chicken wire at the bottom and along the ground but that does absolutely nothing. Do I have to cover everything with row covers? Pick off every single bad bug? Set traps everyday? What do you tell yourself to keep from crying and giving up? Maybe it's time to pay someone to come weekly to do some of the work. I already have a yard/mower guy but I don't trust that he knows how to garden, from what I've seen. My garden has always been my sanctuary, my pleasure, my relaxation. Now it's a source of heartache, physical pain, and frustration. I also have Lyme, chronic lyme, from the ticks on the rodents, which adds paranoia to the feelings....See Moresherrygirl zone5 N il
