Does this Deer-Repellent Work?
Comments (18)I have had really good luck with this Kopy Kat liquid fence recipe. Once in a while I will sprinkle some blood meal to keep the deer guessing. It even keeps the deer out of my corn. I have been using this for the last 4 years. The deer will look, but they don't come near enough to eat. Just sprinkle it all around the perimeter of your garden. I re-sprinkle about once a month. If you live where it rains a lot, you may have to use it more often. Copy Kat Deer and Rabbit Repellent There is a version of "Liquid Fence" on the market. I found this works just as well, just you have to use it more quickly due to it not having the preservatives in it. It smells bad when you apply it--this is your warning!! You will need 5 one gallon containers to mix this up. Fast and easy. 4 to 6 eggs 1 lg head of garlic, chopped 5 gallons of water Any hot pepper you may have in the house Put eggs, garlic and pepper in a blender with some water and blend until well mixed. Empty mixture in one of the gallon containers. Fill the container with water and mix well. Distribute the mixture into the other 4 containers until all 5 containers are equal. Fill all 5 containers with water and set in the sun for 3 days to "ripen". Sprinkle around the perimeter of the area you want to protect. You can also strain some mixture and put it into a spray bottle to spray on plants that might need extra treatment. Retreat every month or after a hard rain. I have also mixed in onions. I donÂt know if it helped or not. I think the eggs and garlic is enough. From what I have read, it helps to change the recipe every once in a while, so the deer donÂt get used to it. You can add milk, dish soap or salad oil in to help it work better....See MoreDo any plants or repellants work for snakes?
Comments (32)I'm no fool, I don't like the poisonous ones. But other than that I'm not afraid of snakes. But I do understand phobias since I have one with cockroaches (go figure that I stay here in Florida!) Anyway, last week while in the veggie patch, I noticed the dog growling and jumping at something. Sure enough, it was a HUGE striped rat snake. I made her stop since it's harmless and I don't want her messing with snakes since we have killed rattle snakes here. Later on that afternoon I go to the chicken coop to gather eggs, I opened up the hatch to the nesting boxes and this snake is inside one of them, trying to swallow a golf ball, with a real egg laying right beside it. So I grab a stick and try to sweep it out of the coop, the stick is brittle and keeps breaking off. I finally get it out of the coop on the ground, still the golf ball is in it's mouth. So I go to look for the pitchfork only to pick it up and move it off the property - when I get back it is gone - the golf ball lying there where it finally managed to spit it out. So I'm searching for it, can't believe it disappeared so fast. Then I looked up in a close-by tree and there it is, out on a limb, sticking it's tongue out at me. So I gave up for about and hour and went back to check the coop - it's back in there AGAIN trying to swallow another golf ball. I chased it back and forth all over that chicken coop but it got away through the chicken wire and into another tree. The next time I will get a pair of gloves on and snatch that sucker up and dispense with him to the neighbor's property....See Moredeer repellant that worked 100%
Comments (6)I use the stinky stuff which works pretty well to keep deer away, but is expensive and repulsive, especially on edibles. Emily, do you find that the bags scare away the birds, too? My feeders aren't too far from the tomatoes, and I'm afraid there will be problems with the bags and the birds. I would love to try the bag solution, if possible. Comments (5)We have a terrible deer problem here, so my heart goes out to you, Indyroma. I use the home made spray because the commercial ones are soooo expensive. (Like $40). I mixed up some a few days ago: eggs, a little milk, whole dried chili peppers, lots of garlic powder and water. Put some vegetable oil in it to help it stick to leaves. I process it in my Vitamix blender, but still have to strain it because your pump sprayer will clog. It works well. After it dries, like bethnorcal says, you cannot smell it. The deer have been browsing on my hosta, clematis vine, and roses. It is horrible- I am torn because they all have babies right now and are really hungry. But we work too hard in our yard to have it all eaten in a few days. I am truly sorry about your DA buds. Hopefully, you can get them sprayed and they will re grow new buds for you....See MoreVaporvac Z6-OhioRiverValley
