First Nursery Trip of the Year Today.
Comments (12)Jean- They only have the very early stuff out at the nurseries like the pansies, violas, columbines and other really cool weather plants. Stuff like Salvias and most of the common bedding perennials are not stocked yet as it is just too early to plant. Oh, and I love verbena. I want to get some later. Kay- I am not very inspired to do anything unusual with that new gardenbed. I did put lilies at the two ends last year and this spring got the idea to plant columbines toward the back. Then I thought it would look good planted in the violas for lots of color. You can blame your violas for that. They just look so good I had to buy some of my own. The two bowls both have purple violas in them but they are slightly different from the one bowl to the other. I liked them both. I had two viola bowls on my kitchen stoop all last summer and I really liked them so I decided to get viola bowls again. The ones I had died over the winter, just like all the violas in the ground died too....See MoreSome pictures from my garden today (pic heavy!)
Comments (32)Thank you, everyone, for your nice comments. Jadie-Berry Smoothie is a more intense pink in spring and Georgia Plum is truly plum. GP is also pretty small in size. Both glow in the garden and are worth having, IMHO. GP packs quite a whollop of color into its little size. They both age differently (color wise) as well. Berry smoothie gets almost a grape color to it with very veiny leaves. DGregory-Ophir is quite a show stopper in the spring, but unfortunately it does go green in the summer. Still an attractive hosta, though and well worth growing. Mine is young yet. I've seen pics of mature ones and it's pretty amazing when it grows up. Dark Star is definitely worth growing. It's truly beautiful, which is why (I think) a lot of people have it. It gets darker in color later in the season, hence the name. Mocc-I think your boat with hostas idea sounds awesome! It could be such a focal point. Make sure to post pics if you actually decide to do it. I'd love to see how it turns out....See MoreA few pics from my trip to Florida (2012)
Comments (24)I did take the African tour. Haha I cant believe the guide played along with that, that's pretty funny. Im sure they wait all day to say something like that! The trees your thinking of are Baobab trees and all the info about them are true. At the size they are in Animal Kingdom, they are sometimes up to 1000 years old. They also lose their leaves for much of the year and then for a short period of time make lots of leaves and blooms during the short wet season. The trees could probably survive in Florida (There are some in Fairchild Tropical Garden in Miami which stays green for most of the year since Florida is wet most of the year and then loses it's leaves in the winter when Florida gets very little rain), but they would never get to the size that Disney needs them to be to make it look like Africa so they did some "imagineering" and created the trees with concrete. That whole area was completely flat land before Animal Kingdom, they added truck loads and truck loads of dirt daily for much of the construction time in Animal Kingdom in order to give the landscape enough dynamics to pull off the African look. Disney World is a pretty impressive place for sure with lots of great plats! -Alex...See MoreSome Pics from Northwest Trip
Comments (16)Mantis: I told you I'd keep coming back. My interest too was peaked by the tall yellow flower and I figured it was a Lupine. I love Lupines but can't grow them here (although I have one in a pot now because I can't give up trying). I've never seen this bubbly yellow type though. Really unique.......I did look up the Angel Wings Senecio. It would do better in a pot in your area then in mine. It's from the Patagonia region of Chili, refined and trialed by a Japanese firm in the more northern mountains of Japan. A climate more similar to yours then my hot humid tropical nightmare (for it at least). It would be an annual for both of us with a zone 8 hardiness designation. But paired with red flowers in containers it was dazzling. I'm glad you showed all of this. Love to see new plants............Maryl...See MoreNextObsession?
