The 'stick ups' are called scoli. I've never read anything that gives a reason for them being there, so I assume it's just to make the caterpillar appear ferocious so as to scare away predators. They're harmless to people, don't sting, and I've seen many pictures of people holding the late instar caterpillars in their hands, kids included. Each instar of this species is different from the others. The scoli are much taller in relation to overall body size in the early instars than they are in the later instars. In the later instars, their body gets thick, and the scoli point backward. There are many pictures of them on the internet, but I'll be posting pictures of each instar, since they're so unique. The adults are beautiful. Since they only have one flight per year, I won't see the adult moth until next year. I'll have to provide these with a bucket of leaves or paper towels for them to burrow into when they're ready to make their pupa. I'll keep them on the porch unless we have an extremely cold night (like the one last January) and then I'll bring them into my unheated guest room. I'm getting ahead of myself here, though. They're not the easiest ones to raise, so I don't want to jinx things by talking about their pupae just yet! :) Sherry

I'm sorry for not answering sooner; had to go away over the weekend. First, let me thank the two of you for introducing me to CCleaner. I downloaded it and expect to find it useful. I'll explain what I did in detail, just in case anyone else ever has the same problem. After getting back last night, I was successful in saving images in IE, but FireFox was still no good. Figuring it was something wrong with FF, I found a disturbing entry in FF's Tools>Error Console, calling a certain path in the computer "Not well-formed," but there was no explanation of how to deal with it. Removing FireFox via the Control Panel and reinstalling it did no good, nor did disabling all my add-ons and deleting temp files and cache. In the end, getting desperate, I backed up the Bookmarks and Scrapbook folders in my FF Profile, then I went to C:\Documents and Settings\[my user name]\Application Data\Mozilla, and deleted the entire Mozilla folder so as to force the new FF install to create a new one. This time, the new FF--though all my Bookmarks, Scrapbook add-on entries, and all the other add-ons I used to have were gone--worked right, and I was able to capture pictures again. I re-downloaded all the extension add-ons I had had before, and now everything is fine. At first, of course, my Bookmarks toolbar was gone, and I use it constantly, so that was a bit scary, but after moving the backup folder from the CD to my FF Profile folder, I got the toolbar back, and I was able to do the same thing for all my Scrapbook entries. If anyone else tries this, be sure to make a backup of your Bookmarks and Scrapbook (if you have that add-on) and also make a list of your add-ons and be sure you have a record of all the passwords FireFox has been remembering for you. Scavenger If your pictures haven't been written over on your hard drive. One thing that I tried and liked is Scavenger. http://www.quetek.com/download.htm I tell you what little I know about it. I just played with it retriving small items. You should download to a CD not your computer. If you download or write over your pictures their gone. When you go to scavenger to download the Demo (Free Demo) look for this. filescav.exe (Executable file, 1,134 KB) filescav.chm (Help file, 54 KB) I didn't download the help file. Scavenger Demo will let you retrieve pictures for free. You can't recover to your hard drive. You must use an extra drive of some kind to save your pictures to. I used a USB Sandisk. Cost about $20.00. From that you can move the pictures to your computer. As best as I can tell when you buy the license they give you the code to make the Demo work to recover as much as you want. Select O Drive, I forget. Try different settings. Click on the header TYPE and all your Jpeg files will be grouped together. You don't have to buy a license to recover pictures. The cover picture is automatically set as public. From the Help section again. Note the "you may not have the option to choose certain photos" part. "Since your cover goes across the entire width of your timeline, the image you select for your cover has to be at least 720 pixels wide. This means "you may not have the option to choose certain photos as your cover image," or you may get an error if you try uploading a photo that isnâÂÂt big enough. If the photo you want to use is too small, try uploading the photo in high resolution, or choosing a different photo."
