Need new camera to take pics of my roses!

I need some advice. Since last summer, I got Windows 10 on my computer and just discovered today, as I prepared to take my first pics of the new growing season, that my old digital Kodak won't work with Windows 10--so I can't upload any pics.

My son says my Kodak is about 10 years old--I need a new with the new technologies. I have no idea what that means.

So here is my everyday language describing what I want--simple, easy to use, point and shoot--except that I like to be able to adjust the exposure myself. I also liked that my old Kodak could be adjusted to "landscape" and to "close-up"--it would be nice to have that also.

Probably most of the other things cameras do are wasted on me since those are the only things I ever used on my old Kodak.

So what would be a good choice for those criteria that I could find at Wal-mart today? Expense isn't a big deal although if given a good choice, I always go for the cheaper ones.

I was so disappointed yesterday that I couldn't show you my first roses in bloom for this year--and some pretty nifty peonies and irises also!

Appreciate any advice you can give.

Thank you , everyone, for all the advice. I started looking up a lot of the things you mention when my computer son finally wandered in and when I asked how expensive a memory card reader is, he pointed to a slot on my computer and said, "You already have one!" (He isn't always eager to give me advice, so sometimes I have to wait forever to get info from him--but today he was in the mood, showed me where my memory card was located on my camera and how to insert it in the computer--and a couple other things like make sure I this and that before I take out the memory card, etc. He is so helpful--when he wants to be!

Anyway, the long and short of it is that my old camera and my new Windows 10 are now talking to each other and I can post pics again--hurrary!

That's my Scarlett O'Hara peony, as a thank you to all who helped me in my dilemma.

Canon or Nikon,

Sony.... Olympus...

Select your price range, features, then narrow to 2 or 3 within the brands. Then compare based upon reviews, advice etc.

Kate can you use a memory card with your Kodak. Then upload from the memory card that you insert into the computer.

I lost them from neglect. I got sick and couldn't take care of them. My neighbor also cut his tree down durring that time and my plants toasted.....I was getting constant panic attacks. Even laughing would trigger one. Since then I've learned to deal and not panic :) I'm remarried and this hubby likes plants. When I can't tend to my plants he will. I have a great support system now ❤

Thanks again! Its just a Cannon Power Shot "point and shoot". Not anything as fancy or expensive as a Rebel. I didn't adjust any of the optional settings other than the super macro. Good advertisement for Cannon! Not the photographer! But thanks anyway! Sure is fun!

One work-around I've found for that, Marlorena, is to back up and take the shot from a further distance. The camera will likely get all items in focus, doing that. Then you can take advantage of the great resolution the camera has by cropping and enlarging that portion of the photo, so it is like a close-up. Another trick is to experiment with the plane of the shot. By slightly depressing the shutter button, the camera will show you which areas are in focus in the field of view by surrounding those with green rectangles. If you tilt the camera slightly or shift it to a slightly different view, you will often find you can bring more of a view into focus by doing that kind of adjustment.

Patty said what I was going to. I have a memory card reader. It will read maybe 20 different kinds of memory cards from various cameras.

Take your Kodak to WallMart or BestBuy and ask a salesperson to check your memory card for compatibility with the memory card readers they have.

My camera has a cord that will plug into the camera and then into the computer's USB port. Is that how you used to do it? Me too. Now it's earsier for me to use the memory card reader instead as I have a couple of different cameras.

The other possibility is Win10 not have the "drivers" (files) needed for your camera model. In my town I've found more computer savy people at Best Buy than at Staples or WalMart. If your new computer is a laptop you can take it with you to make certain all works. I have done that at BestBuy regarding a power cable. I asked if they matched the best online price (as I'd heard another customer do) and he did a search then and there on the computer by the cash register and took another $10 off the sale price (to match WallMart's price).

Getting a memory card if possible should be more cost effective, but the image quality of newer cameras, due to changes with the chip etc., has improved by leaps and bounds over the past decade. I am not a feature creature, and prefer user friendly, but the image quality....

Oh, and definitely Best Buy. B.B. will often price match deals found on Amazon and other places.

Before you consider a new camera, check the reviews on the Internet and pay special attention about how the camera processes reds. IMO the only difference between say a Cannon or a Nikon, is how they handle the red colours. So many cameras are still distorting reds. A very important colour if you are into taking pictures of roses.

Can't beat our old Kodak's for simplicity. Mine has all I need or will ever use in a camera. Very happy it worked out for you. My son is a bit the same way. He's a great fellow but need to catch him in the right moment for computer assistance.
