Newbie needs help with Shady front yard landscaping, please :)
Comments (6)This isn't a 'shady' area. It is an area that gets decent sun. Shade plants can often handle an eastern exposure, but not always. Start by deciding what you would like it to look like *in the winter*. Deciduous shrubs look like dead sticks. So it is usual to plant shrubs that have some sort of color during the winter. Instead of the hydrangea, a blue colored conifer like a blue juniper would provide that color all year, then a shorter, flowering shrub could be planted in front. There are also gold conifers. BTW, the shrubs on the left are probably some sort of flowering shrub. I'd get them ID'ed before yanking them out. A lot of things are looking unusually ratty after this winter, and they may just need a bit of time and some pruning to look decent....See MoreNeed help with Landscaping please
Comments (2)The little tree screamed out to be removed even before the page is fully loaded! Like the tree but it is in the wrong place! This is general scheme of arranging, not specifically what plants to use. Can check with shrubs/trees forums or the one for your geographical area, or check with local experts. Oh, and if it was my house, I would put some effort into widening the steps to the full width of the opening, with the walk to match as it approaches steps. I would advice against pinching the entrance area with the potted plants. If there is going to be such planters, I would move them outside of the entrance, flanking it ... where I show the color. I don't think it's needed if you have large enough color....See MoreHelp!!! This entrance needs help!
Comments (7)Aside from the shrubs, as is, I like this entrance. If and when your shrubs grow and fill in between them and you can trim them a uniform height just above the floor level, that will be an improvement. Perhaps you could move the shrubs closest to the railing to a bare spot between the other shrubs. Adding a pair of large planters -- one on each side of the steps -- with something to add color could improve curb appeal. There are pressed metal exterior wall decorations that might be added to the brick -- either on each side of the opening or something (for instance, a sun) above it. https://www.google.com/search?biw=1366&bih=650&tbm=isch&sa=1&ei=mo5aWq3LHIfq_AbCx6y4CQ&q=image+pressed+metal+art+sun&oq=image+pressed+metal+art+sun&gs_l=psy-ab.3...3441.3954.0.6553.4.4.0.0.0.0.76.282.4.4.0....0...1c.1.64.psy-ab..0.0.0....0.BYK8FJEkONU...See MoreNeed help with a small entry way. Comments (7)I don't mind the table and mirror and can't really think of anything besides art that would fit on that wall. Can't see the table details well but could it be painted? How about red to match your lovely door? What would say "fresh and cozy" to you for that space? Have you thought of a new light fixture? A runner and a larger rug in the entrance could look good. I don't find the clock visible from the door to be welcoming so I'd be tempted to remove it....See MoreAmy Findley_Winters
