Walk-in pantry: shelving/cabinets/other?
Comments (3)I haven't done it myself, but I believe that a number of people on this formum have lined their wire shelves with Cushy Cupboards. Target and Wal Mart sell something similar, but I wil leave it to others on the boards to relate their experiences....See MoreWood or wire shelves for walk-in pantry
Comments (29)I'm wondering what different people here mean by "wire shelving." The comments about it being "cheaper" suggests folks are talking about something different that what I think of for "wire shelving." Mine are several hundred dollars a bay, which is certainly not "cheap", or "cheaper than wood." I suspect people who don't like them have some sort of low-quality shelving, like I've seen for sale in a hardware store around here. I have "Metro" shelving, and it's great. "Cleaning" isn't an issue--it stays clean with having to do any cleaning*. It is rare for there to be a problem with things falling over. Light comes through the shelves, which makes it much easier to see what is there than if they were solid. (I note that I run a lot of it quite close together--like one 14-oz. can high, so that I can pack of lot of stuff in not very much space.) I've attached a link to the kind of shelving I have, except that I have about 8 shelves in the same space as their illustration shows 4 shelves. * Regarding cleaning: I've done some work in a Class 10 cleanroom, and all the shelving there was exactly the same stuff (though the stainless steel version rather than the chrome version, because all the metal in the cleanroom is required to be stainless steel). It's there because it's the cleanest shelving available. To give you some idea of what is expected there, people have to be in bunny suits, wear gloves, and go through and air shower before entering. Here is a link that might be useful: Metro shelving...See Morewood or wire shelving in pantry closet?
Comments (22)For what it's worth, I mentioned this thread to my DH and he noted that he LOVES our Elfa wire shelving and said that he would NEVER want to go back to wood shelving as we had in the pantry closet of our last house. He also mentioned that--at least when we bought our components--he thinks one could mix and match solid shelves and wire shelves, so one could have some solid shelves for small items or things that tip over more easily if one really wanted them. Just a thought. BTW, Elfa systems are more expensive than other wire shelving systems, I think. But the Container Store usually has a big sale on them at least once per year that makes them much more reasonable....See MoreShelving in pantry closet? Closet organization systems?
Comments (16)I have Elfa ventilated shelves (and some drawers) in my pantry and laundry room both. I love them BUT I use liners so I don't have the wobbly issue going on. That would drive me crazy. Elfa's ventilated shelves, unlike what you can find at Lowe's, HD or Ikea, have the wires a lot closer together. They also "lock" into place so the wire part is sitting really firmly in the bracket - not just a piece of wood sitting on top of the shelf bracket. As far as organizing little things, Elfa has "shelf baskets" that you can put dividers in and stack stuff in if need be. In the pic below, I have one of those on the immediate left (3 shelves up) and above the counter top oven in the back. I use it for bags of baking stuff like chocolate chips, coconut, etc on the left and treats in the back. And I absolutely love their big drawers. Container Store's return policy is great too - anytime with a receipt and the best Elfa sales is 30% off all Elfa products. It starts Dec. 24th and goes through the end of January typically. There is one in the fall that isn't as good - 25% of Elfa Shelving. (No, I don't work for Container Store, I am just a big fan and will be buying some more Elfa stuff during their Dec. sale.) Here's a picture of our new pantry....See More1929Spanish-GW
