Can we talk Walk_In pantry shelving ?
Comments (10)Why not consider something like Metro Shelving (or one of the many other brands of similar shelving). This is the heavy wire shelving used in many commercial kitchens. It's available in numerous sizes, many different finishes, you can configure the shelves to suit your needs, there are tons of optional specialty storage accessories available, and it'll save you a bundle over the cost of custom shelving built-ins. I initially put Metro in my walk-in pantry as a temporary solution until I figured out what I really wanted. I liked it so well, I kept it and just modified some of the configuration and added some accessories. I keep groups of things that I'm likely to use at the same time in pull-out plastic baskets. Baking supplies, for instance, are kept in one basket that I just lift out and bring to my work area when I'm baking. The same for other similar groups of items. Works great. If you have one of those "storage container" stores or a restaurant supply store in your area, they usually have a good selection of sizes and accessories. If you don't like the wire shelves, you can get clear plastic liners that fit on top of each shelf, giving you a nice smooth surface. Also, if you shop around on line, you can often save even more. Quite a few places discount quite heavily. Here is a link that might be useful: Metro Shelving...See MoreShelving materior for walk in pantry
Comments (5)We used wood for our kitchen and MBR closet but painted in other bedrooms. I like the stained wood better in the walk-in pantry since it doesn't scratch like paint could and if it did, it's easier to repair. Our trim carpenter built it out to my specs. Shelves are fixed, and after 5 years no regrets or changes wanted. The shelves on the right were built around an HVAC return (deep), and they hold more than they appear in the pictures. Last two pictures are my pantry: Here is a link that might be useful: pantry...See MoreWire shelves in kitchen pantry?
Comments (23)I have Elfa in mine and they make thick plastic sheets that fit in the shelves and make it an even surface. I saw a picture -- probably on Pinterest -- of laminate floor tiles placed on wire shelves. Small, easy to clean, cheap; seems like a winner to me. I'm betting they're going to put in 18" deep (or deeper) shelving - much too deep for a pantry (12" is ideal). I know this is standard advice, but I'm fine with 18". I have a number of LARGE Lazy Susans that allow me to access things at the back. Since I bake wedding cakes, I have cake pans as large as 16" wide, which I store on the upper shelves. In my new house, I plan to have BOTH 12" and 18" shelves in my pantry. I plan to have some Elfa pull-out drawers on the lower portion, and they're something like 22 or 23" deep....See MoreWalk-in pantry layout advice
Comments (11)I just redid my pantry which has almost your exact dimensions. California Closets did the layout and they came up with some good suggestions. They made most of the shelves to fit my large Anchor Hocking glass storage jars or my large plastic snap on containers from Costco. One addition was vertical storage for my seldom used cookie sheets and trays. That was installed fairly high since we rarely use them. Most of the shelves are adjustable. We put in wire pull outs to keep onions and potatoes fresh and off the kitchen counters. We also installed an outlet front and center in case we wanted to use small appliances in there. Our contractor also placed an LED light on the wall right above the door(instead of on the ceiling) so that light would shine directly on the shelving. He also put tape lighting hidden along the doorway for more light down low. The lights go on automatically when the door opens. We are also installing a 2x6‘ rack (I think from rev-a-shelf) on the inside of the door to hold spices and bottles in plain sight. We have spice racks and tray storage in the kitchen itself too. Like you, we put hooks left of the door for a step stool and a apron. As for depth of shelves—I am a totally dysfunctional organizer so I find narrower shelves are easier for me to see what I have and where I put stuff. For a sort of small food pantry we can fit a lot of stuff in there and it stays organized (for the most part). I can‘t believe your floor plan is almost identical to ours—I bet yours is built under the stairs too? Good luck!...See MoreJean Farrell
