Here is a second rambler, threaded through an eleagnus. Though its growing conditions are unfavorable, this rose remains cheerful at all times, though it has really grown vigorously this year with the spring rain. It has bright green foliage with evergreen tendencies, flowers are a bit pinker than in the photo, keeping most of their color through their life, with no fragrance to speak of; the rose has at times had a few fall blooms, doesn't get disease that I recall, doesn't form hips that I remember.

I've actually checked the plants with the Weeks label at our local nursery this spring. Yes, it's a small nursery, but they were selling "bare root" plants from Weeks. My thought was that I was going to go ahead and purchase roses that were in the field before Weeks went bankrupt and I would still be able to get good quality plants. I was almost right. The bud union looked great and the top growth .. the canes from the bud union .. looked healthy and strong. Then I pulled the plant out of the sand where the nursery was keeping their bare root plants to look at the roots. I almost cried. The root system was nothing like the bare root roses from Weeks that I had purchased in the past. I even wonder if the roses were budded to Dr. Huey. There was ONE anchor root and a lot of very small roots growing under the bud union that were about six inches long. I checked several of the roses and they were all like that. I couldn't make myself pay a premium price for a plant like that. Yes, I think I could have managed to "save" the rose, but I was so disappointed in what I saw that I didn't even want to try. The quality was so poor compared to what I had purchased in the past as a Weeks rose. When I checked other quality nursery's stock, I found the same thing. A couple of those nurseries had already planted the roses in containers long before bare root season was supposed to be over so that customers could not see the root system. Now the question becomes which roses that have been tested as budded roses and previously marketed as budded roses will do well own root. I agree with Kim, purchase your new roses from people who really know their roses. Not Smiling, Lyn

It's probably the rootstock. I would mark those canes and see if they bloom again this summer, if not it's almost positively the rootstock. Dr. Huey is a once bloomer that only blooms on old wood. If it reblooms you know it's not Dr Huey rootstock. If it's rootstock most likely the grafted rose will die out and Huey will take over. Someone more knowledgable will have to advise if there is any chance of saving the grafted plant by cutting those newer canes off all the way down below the ground - my only experiences with Dr Huey were cases where the grafted plant had completely died off during bad winters and I ended up removing the entire plant.

BenT: 😂... you’re right it might just be destiny... that’s so funny you mention Grand Dame... I was also thinking the same thing. But doesn’t she bloom in large sprays of blooms? That’s the one reason figured it wasn’t Grand Dame. It’s definitely not pretty lady… since I have pretty lady and the Bloom form is different. 🌸 It’s funny you mention Me and Grand Dame crossing paths... I was at Home Depot on the same day I saw that mystery rose... and came across this mislabeled rose. 🌸 It’s definitely not the roses on the tag. It had 4 or more broken canes and blooming buds... made me so sad. But even with all those broken canes, it still had a good number of buds left on the plant and one flower in bloom. 🌸 Fragrance was moderate and lovely. So I decided to take a chance on it and bring it home with me. Do you think this might also be Grand Dame?
