Any complaints about RTA chinese cabinets?
Comments (16)Don't buy chinese kitchen cabinets!!! These cabinets contain up to 100% more formaldehyde than american manufacturers are allowed to use. The formaldehyde content is so high that in three years it breaks down the glue in the plywood and the plywood delaminates. I have witnessed this as I used to assemble these cabinets. Many of these plywood sides were already delamanated before they left the shop. When I would get a splinter it would get infected quickly. I also contracted a skin disorder that I can't identify or get rid of. Over two million children die in China in a year from leukemia and cancer due from the exposure to the formeldahyde. If you have these cabinets and can't replace them, keep the room cool as heat releases formeldahyde at a faster rate....See MoreWhere to buy RTA cabinets online?
Comments (28)I used Scherr's. It's been two years. I'm still delighted. I want to do another kitchen. That's kind of sick, I know. I did want to comment about the assembly process. Each manufacturer uses a different assembly technique. While I can only speak to the Scherr's process, I have to say it is one stout cabinet. They don't use clips as illustrated above. I think they are much more solid that some of the standard custom cabinets I have used in the past. The bottom line is each company stands on their own merits. I like Scherr's because of the quality of the product, they are manufactured in North Dakota and the outstanding customer service. If you have a problem, you get a real person to help solve it. I have read numerous posts that indicated Barker's produces a good product. Their customer service is involves a lot of email. I like the telephone method myself. Conestoga is another domestic manufacturer of RTA frameless cabinets. With these companies, you can be assured the materials meet acceptable health standards, too....See Moremy latest rental kitchen renovation is nearly done! despite ikea
Comments (26)lovetorenovate, I just saw this post as I'm about to renovate my first rental property. I'm planning on IKEA cabinets in gray and cream. Can you tell me the kind of granite you selected and what level it was? I love that look. It sounds like you are an experienced rental manager so I'd especially appreciate your advice. I'm debating about appliances, whether to go gas or smoothtop electric, and what level to go with or even if I should go with late model used. I'd love more details about this rental unit if you will share! Thanks!...See MoreHave budget for $$$ cabs, but chose Ikea?
Comments (35)Back when I had a TV, I used to watch "New Yankee Workshop" every week with Norm. He made it look so easy, lol! I'd think, "I bet I could make that. Hmmm, first I'll need to go buy $20,000 worth of woodworking tools..." The article sushipup1 posted was very revealing. It confirmed that basically, as Ichabod Crane so eloquently put it, that cabinets are boxes to stick your stuff in. And all boxes are basically the same. Even the highest end stuff uses particle board boxes, so basically it's the shelves and doors you're paying for. As Ichabod Crane and other commenters pointed out, the shelves are good. They hold stuff without sagging. They have one job, and they do it well. The doors are attractive, and according to that article and several others I have read, they use superior hardware, meaning superior to the hardware used by some high end places. Also, as pointed out, if you get tired of the doors, you can easily swap them out. And as bbtrix said, they are made to be organizational helpers. Their selection of drawer organizers is fabulous. For me, besides price, which was my main criterion, the greatest factor is how they can be built any way you want them...I think it was this article that likened them to Legos that you can put together any way you like. All drawers in the bases? no problem! A slide-out under your sink for the trash can? Done! Want an island? Build it however you want! No one can do what IKEA does for so little money. But, as bbtrix said so well, it's a personal decision. If you would be disappointed every time you walked into your kitchen, don't get them. If it's within your budget, get what makes your heart sing! It's YOUR kitchen, and only YOU know what will truly make you happy. I wish you all the best as you go forward with your kitchen and I know it will turn out beautifully! :-)...See MoreJoseph Corlett, LLC
