Any feedback on making your own backsplash mosaic?

8 years agolast modified: 8 years agoI've never made my own mosaic from scratch, but I've worked with 5/8" glass tiles and customized the mix of colors/layout. The most tedious thing is going to be the spacing of the tiles. If there is anything you can do to simplify this part of the task, your chances of success will greatly improve. Keeping the custom area small is definitely going to help as well.
People have all sorts of creative ideas for bs tile. Just keep in mind you are using glass, you will need a wet tile saw and a diamond blade if you're going to make any cuts, and if you find that you need to remove any of the tile you've mounted, use chain mail or leather gloves and eye protection. Comments (28)I can see why it might be advisable to remove the left/rt portions of tile, but I would be inclined to wait until ithe kitchen is completed before deciding. If, as your gut tells you, it "needs" to come down, nothing is really lost except a little more time with it up. Perhaps knowing you are not "locked-in" or committed to it, will help give the perspective to view it more objectively while deciding for sure. This way you will not only have the chance to see it with everything else in place, but you will also have the opportunity to get used to it, before deciding if you truly dislike it, or just haven't gotten used to it being there. As subtle (in color) as our tile is, after months of looking at white painted Sheetrock, it still looked "different" and stood out when we looked at our kitchen. Once we became accustomed to it, we couldn't imagine our walls without it. That's how I am with many things--after living with a blank wall or empty space for any period of time, even a long awaited piece of furniture or decor item jumps out at me, and almost seems like too much, until I get used to the vacant space being filled. Thanks for the compliments on our backsplash Laura and andreak100! It's the Opera Glass tile from Artistic Tile (Stilatto pattern) in Wolfgang White. It does read greenish-blue(-grey) in certain lights or times of day. We had to think about that one while deciding if we wanted to use it, and obviously decided to go for it! Good luck Laura! Comments (20)So tired of hearing " but that will make it look dated" or "it wouldn't be good for resale" Everything is going to be dated at some point, the kitchen designers, cabinet companies and appliance companies make sure of that. Example: stainless steel appliances were just coming on the market 15 years ago when we gutted our kitchen for a remodel. It was hard for me to find stainless in my area at that time, I live in a small mid western town. So, have you noticed in the past few years appliance companies have been trying to bring out new colors, grayed looking stainless, now ice white etc. they are trying to make people think their stainless appliances are soon going to be "dated". But I have read in several articles that stainless is still the number one choice. I chose a cinnamon stained cherry wood for our new build. I thought about white because that is the trend right now, but I reasoned cherry cabinets will always be in style while the white trend Has just a few more years. I won't be a slave to trends. Comments (40)I think the cobblestone is too bumpy a texture for Berwyn. I picture Berwyn with crackle subway tiles that bring out that little sparkle in the counter, and white or gray Shaker cabinets, but that's not a contemporary look. I can't picture it with hi gloss white cabinets, and I don't think glass subways can turn it into a contemporary look. Berwyn mimics natural stone and to my eye that doesn't work with man-made hi gloss. I see a solid white or a dark quartz counter with those cabinets. But maybe I have a different picture in my mind of what hi gloss contemporary cabinets look like versus the Dura Supreme cabinets you've selected....See Morejess1979

I did not have to cut any tiles, each tile was separate. We used the mesh backing and glued each tile onto it. We did not use spacers we kept it straight by the little squares on the mesh.

Fortunately I'm not going to deal with any glass and won't need to cut any tile, though we might do a couple triangles for detail. We're going to try to do 2 colors (light and dark) or 3 if we can swing it and contrast looks good.

cpartist very interesting. Using powerpoint I was able to get very close (all my blocks are .005 inches off so I can't follow the template exactly) and was planning to tape that to a cardboard box and then lay down mesh and glue tiles. Is that similar to what you did with the gator board or did that have another purpose? Never worked with it before. That's awesome though, yours came out really nice too.
I wish I could just draw on the wall for mine too but these tiles are pretty small!
Really appreciate all the feedback. Here's the design, will post pics in a few weeks when we actually make it!

7 years agoThanks again all! I think it came out great and I'm really happy with it. Being our first time doing this, my girlfriend and I had it looking pretty good, but not perfect. The contractor was great and made it look just right.
