Any feedback on making your own backsplash mosaic?

My SO and I are planning to put together a mosaic to go over the sink when new backsplash is installed. The tiles are pretty small (we are most likely going to use 5/8" tiles) and we plan to do a "pixel" mosaic to make things a little easier.

We already have a design made for individual tile placement and plan to have it printed life size to put under the mesh so we know where the lighter color and darker color tiles should be placed to create the shape we're after. I don't expect it to be perfect... but we we'll throw a lot of time at it until it looks how we want.

We have most of the stuff covered I think... tiles, mesh, weldbond glue, life-size poster of design for guidance. One thing we don't have is spacers because we can't find any in the right size, but we were going to use washers that are appropriately thick (1.1mm).

Has anyone done this? Any hints that could help make this a success?
