Newbie to gardening- Need help with sloped lawn

Hi,

I am a newbie to gardening. I want to do something with a slope in my yard that is difficult to mow. Every time I mow it I fear that I am going to slip and the lawn mower is going to slide on me. I, of course, never mow uphill, but even sideways is difficult.

Ideally, it would be shaped, filled with mulch and drought resistant plants (Zone 5b). We do have a sprinkler, but we have very dry, hot summers, so the grass tends to suffer in that area anyway.

Right now, the grass is quite green because we have had an early spring. I also don't have a lot of help because my husband has physical limitations and I have 3 small children. :)

I was going to use landscaping fabric and cover with mulch, but this webs seem to say this is not a good idea.

I wouldn't mind crunchy gravel if I could physically do it, too.

Where would you start? What mechanics do I need to be aware of for snow, rain, water run-off? How do I kill the grass? Thanks so much for your help. I'll follow with a picture.
