Summer Wine

I planted this rose by mistake (was sent to me as Altissimo), but I love it. Both of these pics were taken out a window of our house. In the second pic you can see a huge old Lamarque in the background growing in one of my neighbor's yards - it has been there over 80 years. They just ignore it.

How beautiful. Since I don't care for red roses I think this was a wonderful mistake. The color blends well with everything else, and it's a lovely shrub. I so wish that I could have some of these monsters in my yard, but unfortunately they need lots of water to grow this big. It's difficult to believe you live on a busy street when I see pictures like this.

Yes, I agree about the color - I was saved from a mistake by serendipity! It is a very old neighborhood (oldest houses in the 1880s, youngest from the 1920s). So, even though all of the streets are busy, there is a mature tree canopy everywhere, and lots of old out buildings, and neglected preserved old shrubs including roses.

I was drawn in by that Amsonia hubrichtii. I search a bit more and found that same pic in a GW post last year and someone called it a weed! What? Nice combo of plants TJ and nhbabs. The Summerwine I had reached 5' after 4 years. If they have good moisture they grow pretty fast. A Coppertina I planted last year is now 5' wide. I'm convinced that they mean the plants can be controlled to 5' or 6'. Coppertina is by far the most superior ninebark cultivar. The newly emerging copper like foliage against the dark purple foliage is absolutely stunning. Looks great on the initial flush as well as it literal glows against the tan bark.

Ninebark 'Summer Wine' for Harsh Climate

I have 3 Summer Wine ninebark in full sun positions. This summer in the Chicago area we had many days of temps in the high 90's or low 100's with very little rain. I did not give them any supplemenal water. The color stayed dark wine all summer, no browning. However, they are in good soil in a shrub border so no reflective heat issue. They are much tougher that weigela. I would definitely give Summer Wine a try.

Ninebark 'summer wine' question

My summer wine ninebark gets floppy after a hard rain or storm, NE Indiana, and remains that way . Doesn't bounce back and regain it' shape. Anyone have thoughts on that? Also, hasn't flowered the last 2 years. It is a mature plant, planted around 2005.

That is the source of the wonderful scent and foliage for Blue for You, Rhapsody in Blue, Eyes for You and many of the other British Hulthemias. I'm glad you have it. It has a very good reputation.

That is a beautiful rose, Jackie! I am so happy to see a photo of a mature Summer Wine as I have a young one that was gifted to me by a dear friend. I see that I must allow plenty of room for this rose.
