Everyone has a least favorite gardening activity....what's yours?
Comments (28)Yup I have a readers digest book from 1978 I was just rereading and low And behold man was going to cause an ice age LOL. In the mean time I think we need to garden and changing weather seems to be a fact of life as does talking about it. He he, back to O P on gardening. I hate to water I put in a square foot garden, Mel's mix and all. I like to use soft water as our tap water just don't seem to work for growing. Well we had a dry year here so I was stuck going to the local lake, no problem except my raised beds needed 2 inches of water a week what a pitb. Whats with that? My small in ground bed needed water only twice in the same period of time (about 6 weeks) twelve times for the raised beds. So what do I hate, watering my garden! curt :-)...See MoreMore outdoor living
Comments (9)Hi Flowerlady. I was trying to contact you via your blog, and couldn't find an email...so I'm doing it here. I just wanted to say that I've been following your blog off and on for a while (great place you have!!!)...and one day I noticed you had a link to my blog, and I felt so happy and thrilled that you actually did that! It's just nice to know that someone (besides my parents/family & close friends) actually have an interest in my little house and gardening adventures. I've gardened for years, but in my first house (which went along with an abusive marriage), my gardening ideas, plant selections, and creativity had to go through the approval / disapproval / veto process, and it was stifling. I gardened the best I could within the limits I was given. I got out in the yard to clear the noise from my head. Now my daughter & I are out of there, and I have the freedom to do what I want with the level of care and detail I want. I don't have to sell new ideas or justify anything to anyone in the garden. My daughter has taken to gardening now and we love to mess around outside with the plants. I guess my point here is that I am so proud of myself and my little home...and it really touches my heart that someone else cares to see what's going on at my place...especially when it's garden-related. That's all I really wanted to say. Gayle PS: Below is the link to my blog in case you're need a refresher on who I am. Comments (19)Roarah, I did recall you have a cabana. I' most attracted to the first one you posted, and I think that type would come down in the off season. I think the question becomes, how obtrusive is it from the house? It might sort of disappear, but its very hard for me to imagine. The house is on a rise. The front porch faces the ocean, and there are about 10 steps up from the front yard to porch. The yard flows down to the ocean in three sections, and each section is a bit lower than the last. The first section will remain open lawn for games. The middle section will be further divided into a seating/dining area overlooking the pool, with the pool partly nestled into the hill. The the third and last section is partly open field and then a seating area with fire pit at the rocky water's edge. So it's possible the cabana, which is where I would put where the seating and dining area overlooking the pool, will be so low relative to the house and porch that it does not impact the views. I need to experiment ... Missy, I am not sure if a plain tent goes or doesn't. I think I'd rather something that comes down off season, perhaps. We are all fair though, so a place to escape the sun is handy. Unless it makes it too cold; hmm, hence the attraction of umbrellas; you can adjust. I wonder if any of these are very adjustable? I think because of where we are siting things on the property the wind won't be too too bad. Let's hope. Peacamp., OMG I have become so on-line oriented that Ive totally forgotten about magazines! Of course! What fun!...See MoreNeed creative solution for outdoor space
Comments (20)Hi goldendoodle! I've seen some really cute lighting ideas for outdoor spaces on Pinterest. One clever pin showed heavy duty poles planted in buckets of concrete. When dry the bucket is cut away and the concrete bases can be painted or stained. Then you can string lights between 2 poles. I like that they're moveable and not permanently installed. This application is rustic but you could change that to a different style by using other materials. For temporary shade I agree with umbrellas but you should also get some trees planted. My favorite midsize trees are crepe myrtles but I'm not sure if they are appropriate for your part of the country.. good luck and enjoy your summer! PS - your name implies there's a goldendoodle in your life! I'd love to see and hear about him/her! Such adorable dogs....See MoreJane Sandona
