A picture would be worth a thousand words :-) But I think I know what the problem is. I've seen homes in which they've cut out a little of the door molding to accommodate a cover plate. Similarly, you could cut down a regular plastic plate. Or do a little of both. There also are cover plates of varying styles and widths. One solution I've seen at big-box stores is kind of modular: you buy thin "end caps" beveled like a square bracket [ and ] and then the parts in the middle are beveled only on top and bottom and they mix-and-match with openings for regular switches, outlets, holes (for things like timer knobs), etc. They clip together to a custom width based on what you have to accommodate. You could then paint or paper it to look a little nicer.

You can avoid the need for door-swing space by getting drawers on the outsides of the vanity. One possibility that you have not discussed here is to get a trough sink vanity with two faucets. Then you do not have to remodel for resale. If you get a vanity with drawers, you will have accessible towel storage in the bottom deep drawers and storage for smaller items in the upper drawers. Once you remove the wall, you may be able to get a 60" vanity, which will give you many more choices for your vanity. This one is 60" here at Houzz and is one of the few not sold with top and sink, so you may put in any that you choose. The bottom drawers on both sides are double-high, so this vanity has seven drawers!A wide trough sink like this one would technically make this a two-person vanity.And it is small enough that all of the plumbing would fit into the door cabinet part. Really, when a second person is there, often they just need to rinse a tooth brush and spit into the sink or wet a wash cloth while the other is shaving, and this kind of set-up works fine for that. My hubby and I managed that with a single faucet with a swivel mount on a tiny 30" Home Depot Euro-style "belly sink" for years. I don't know what your floor space is going to feel like after you take down the wall, but if you feel you have room to walk around it, they make a matching linen tower. It is 24" wide and 20" deep and 6 ft tall. A linen tower over across from the end of the vanity will keep the vanity area feeling spacious. It is another option instead of having the tall linen tower on the counter looming over you. With all of the drawers you can get in a 60" vanity, do you need the tower? I have a 60" vanity in our main bath now, and it is pretty useless, but that is because it has no drawers at all. As I suggested above, if you are short on floor space, you can have any cabinetry sunk into the wall. Simply have the builder do a header to carry the weight of the stud that needs to be removed, and frame around the opening with a bit of wood trim painted to match the cabinet. You can take the drawer front or door in to the paint shop for a match to be made, or have the trim painted the wall color.

We moved to Florida from NY. The house we bought was so dark inside because of large overhangs from the roof which blocks sunlight and a large lanai running across the back wall which has a roof, no sunlight. We liked the house, but I couldn't stand how dark it was inside. Before we moved in, I call a Tubular Skylight company to get an estimate on installing them in the house. Recommendation was a large one in the kitchen ceiling ($500.00), small one in a bathroom off the hallway($250.00), a medium size in the family room off the kitchen ($325.). I can't tell you how bright this area is now. What I liked is they just go through your attic, make the openings and can position the tube (in the attic) toward south so we get bright light from sunrise to sunset. Over the past 6 yrs when we could afford more, we added to the laundry room (no windows), another bathroom (small skylight), the dining room. My house is so bright when you walk in you think there are spotlights all over the place. It took me a while, initially when the first ones were put in to get used to the high level of light. Looked like a new house! Before putting them in, we had to have our overhead lights lit all day. That costs a lot of money. I feel these tube skylights have paid for themselves in 5 yrs. Plus the house looks like a bright, inviting home. Everyone who walks in comments on how bright our home is. I would look into installing at least one large one in the kitchen, maybe a medium in the hall. So much less expensive than 'real skylights' and keeping the lights lit all day. Jane

Clean-up sink under window and prep sink on the island:ETA, sorry, I hit submit too soon. I like a separate clean-up and prep zone. In the plan above, helpers can load or unload the DW, or gather dishes to set the table, without entering the prep/cooking space. Dishes can be kept in drawers to the left of the clean-up sink. Use as many drawer bases as possible. I don't mind having an island sink, especially a prep sink, centered on a range, since more time is spent prepping to one side of the sink than standing directly in front of it rinsing items. BTW, either sink can be used as prep space, depending on your needs and how many helpers are in the kitchen. Make sure the fridge door will open fully against the wall to the left (red circle). Same for the freezer if it has drawers which will need to be removed for cleaning. FWIW, a more efficient layout would put the fridge on the range wall, near the DR, and the freezer in the corner by the pantry (current fridge location), with maybe a dish hutch where the freezer is drawn. But I realize that wouldn't be as aesthetically pleasing as a centered range and hood. Hearth rooms are meant to be cozy, so I'd leave the wall. NKBA guidelines New to Kitchens? Read me first.
