It is doable but much more information is needed to properly / technically answer the question for your situation. What is the existing sub structure - Wood or concrete? Can the remaining room floor raise, or does the shower floor need to be recessed? Do you need to access the shower from the side or can you from the end? How much expertise does your installer have? Schluter makes a great shower base system just for this application, provides a 2% slope and uses a linear drain. It's not a low budget item for sure but these showers are a growing trend. You can use sliding glass doors if need be, or if the overall design allows, just partial glass and no door.

Wow, that's beautiful! I was asking because we are remodeling and it does seem to be a trend. It is a second story bathroom, though so there is probably not a lot of room to recess into the floor. It definitely looks like something that requires a lot of experience and skill to do. I am not understanding if it is primarily a style trend or serves a purpose....definitely showers are easier to get into than a tub, but seems if one was trying to use a wheel chair, for example, curbless helps, but one still has to fit through the opening? It started as I was looking into cast iron shower pans, well, because stuff like what you have shown requires a very skilled tiler. I am so thankful for the wealth of knowledge and experience people share on this site!

It would just be a substantial luxury expense in your application being 2nd story. It's done on 2nd stories for ADA but there are stair lifts, elevators etc. typically in play. This base system can still be used with a curb and it allows for large format tiles to be used being it's a single slope. The linear drain is the style aspect you are seeing more and more of, not limited to just curbless showers.

I am planning this as a budgetwise powder room extension into the garage. It converts a 1/2 bath to a full bath on the first floor with a 4 x 6 shower. Using wood-look porcelain tile continuously into the shower which will also have a heated floor. 36" opening with no door. In the future, if there are issues and we need to live on the first floor, the shower is a walk or roll in. Alternately, it can be used for kids, pets, or plants. Using a Kohler hydrorail shower/handshower combo. Handshower will have a 6-foot hose.
