There was only minimal dust throughout the whole removal. I bagged the tile in thick black bags and its out of house.

If you are actually worried,have it tested. I don't understand why you would ask people who have never seen the house,much less have credentials.

Asbestos is dangerous when the exposure is in air borne fibers. this variety is referred to as friable. That means if the asbestos containing substance can be crushed with a human hand(or similar pressure).

The most common variety of this kind of danger is in the insulation that used to be used on pipes in buildings that can be removes by simply pulling it off, tearing it away from the pipe.

The asbestos in tiles/shingles is not friable, so there is very little danger.

Those tiles look exactly like the original tiles in my house. The Army Corp. of Engineers designed our neighborhood and built for Navy personnel back in 1954.

I scraped them off, bagged them and trashed them. No concerns for asbestos.

vaccuum, mop, air out the room and you are good to go.

Repeated long term exposure is when you need concern.

You have little to nothing to worry about. As I have told others who have unknowingly removed asphalt asbestos tiles, it is unlikely that you released a number of fibers greater than the naturally occurring number in a cubic liter of air for your region. Worry about something else. Spend money to have the air in your home tested for asbestos, if that will make you feel better.

If you use tobacco products...quit.

tim45z10 and those tiles were very likely asbestos tiles. Not huge concern, but asbestos nontheless.

landeswendy: Just curious. what are your three photos is the black the old tiles or the middle photo. I assume the bottom photo is hte new floor...it came out nice. Good job.

People typically think about this after they remove it and not before.... Not sure why but that is the trend. I wish the DIY shows and HGTV would teach people that flooring and ceiling acoustic panels are the highest asbestos risk for homeowners. Other sources of asbestos are either known or look suspicious and get checked first. For some reason people forget floors. Old tile, old mastic, old felt backed vinyl or linoleum... the majority of old flooring is asbestos.

Anyhow here is an answer for you. You will die at some point. It is unlikely this will make you die any sooner. As noted previously, long term exposure is what caused contractors that installed the product every day to get cancer.

Exactly why i didn't try to analyze the conditions and reccomended op call in pros or just forget about it. But in typical fashion,alot of misleading information was posted by I.Herd and Tha Said. What to test? The air by taking swabs from surfaces in various locations in the home. Does that answer the question to your satisfaction sdello? Misleading information to name a few. "If it can't be crushed by human hand,it's not dangerous". If asbestos material is broken by a sledge hammer there's dangerious dust in the air. "it's gone now and you were only exposed for a short period". Dust can settle in places where it might be made airborne again next week,next year or 5 years later and that can equal long term exposure. "A little bit of exposure is nothing to worry about". Most particles that enter your lungs stay there forever. Tolorance varies widly and it's unheard of suddenly falling dead but most everyone is effected. Soooo,is loosing only 3% of your lung function something you would be indifferent to? Remember,there are hundreds of other things that can effect your lungs in hundereds of different ways but all tend to be cumunlative. 3% here,1% there and 5% over yonder can add up to copd or worse. But leave it to houzz regulars to dip their toes in anything that show's itself. I'm sorry folks but environmental and medical sience is simply over our heads so how about letting those trained in such handle it.

not really. If you take swabs from surfaces you're not testing the air but instead you're testing dust particles that may have been airborne and are now settled out onto the surface. If you're suggesting that professionals come in and completely erradicate the house of any signs of asbestos fibers....well I guess that's an option but it'll be really expensive. That's where your cost vs risk comes into play.

I will preface everything with this: if you didn't saw, grind, sand or otherwise pulverize the tile, you are in very little danger. The fibers are embedded in plastic in these tiles, and they don't even release very well with massive amounts of foot traffic. That's why they are classified as non-friable - as long as you don't abuse them in any of the above ways.

Having said that:

I agree with klem on everything but the swab testing which has already been mentioned. Normally when asbestos abatement is done, the AIR is tested for fibers to confirm the air is clean. But if you released fibers they can get into places, especially carpet and upholstery.

The thing about cleaning up is that the fibers that cause lung problems are VERY TINY and will go right through the average vacuum filter bag. They use HEPA vacuums for this. Same with masks - if you put on the average nuisance dust mask from the hardware store, forget it. You need a rubber facemask with removable cartridge filters rated for particulates.

But again, I wouldn't worry about it.
