Independent from your Extension Service?
Comments (16)In case my post was not seen I am posting here also!! Years ago graduating Master Gardeners from Cornell Cooperative Extension, along with their extension agent, decided to form the Master Gardener Society. They would meet once a month, with the extension agent in attendance, to further their education and for companionship. It became quite a large group with diverse interests. Various trips were included in the curriculum and more speakers were requested. We had plant sales to help us pay for these new additions. Since CCE was basically in charge anything we did needed to be approved by them. It became an inefficient way of doing things and the group became disillusioned. When CCE disbanded the group, we decided to form our own group completely independent of CCE. We formed an independent non-profit organization and called ourselves the Long Island Master Gardeners. We ARE, Master Gardeners, will always BE Master Gardeners and most of us are ACTIVE Master Gardeners. We are proud of our title MG and put in the hours to learn and volunteered hours necessary to become certified! The term Master Gardener is NOT a patented name and can be used by ANYONE! We keep up our active status by giving our volunteer time to CCE, including, manning phones, giving time to the CCE Spring Gardening Schools, helping at various CCE functions and giving classes as needed. As a result we are sent pamphlets and materials and are included in mailings from CCE. We are entitled to take their extended classes as long as we give our required volunteer time and remain ACTIVE Master Gardeners! This is done on an individual basis and has nothing to do with LIMG. As members of LIMG we volunteer our time at community gardens, various nursing homes, ecology centers and try to educate the public on many aspects of gardening. We have educational speakers, including lecturers from Cornell Cooperative Extension! Our group now exceeds 100. It includes Master Gardeners who are not active due to being elderly, ill or just do having time to give their needed volunteer hours. They are still, in our opinion, Master Gardeners! We are enjoying each otherÂs company, furthering our education and taking trips in a very happy relaxed environment. EVERYONE is included in our activities and involved in the running of our group. Board meeting are open to everyone, there are no secrets. We are an efficient and well run independent organization. We VOTE on what we want to do as a group and only answer to ourselves!...See MorePeoplePC internet service--any good?
Comments (10)There's a lot of low-cost ISPs around. I've known a couple people who used PeoplePC and were satisfied but left for broadband. I think they're a bit "spendy" even, since I'm paying less than $5/mo. Let's face facts folks, this myth about "tech support" on anything is mostly a myth. I get free email support. Basically all most anyone would need. Otherwise you'll pay more, either pay $10/mo more and get it "free" or pay by the minute. Once set up, what more will you need? Even the "free" tech support will NOT teach you how to search for the best price on hemmorhoid creams or the like, nor will they solve your computer problems for you. It's limited, very limited. Most of the info you need will be on a website anyway and like I said, once you're going, what more will you need? Be sure to look at features and needs. Number of hours vary. Most will have an email account but not all. Personally I think you're better off using something like Yahoo or Gmail since you're not reliant upon the ISP if you decide to change. More reasons but I won't go into them now. BTW, IMO the "accellerator" programs are worthless and surely not worth paying for. Oh, and FYI, most all of the ISPs use many of the same modem pools for access. So frankly, paying AOL's ridiculous charges get you nothing more than a $4/mo ISP as far as internet access. (Although they have some of their own sites you can go to, whoopie-ding, never interested me). I would give a caution though. I'm amazed when I see people afraid to give a CC # to get a service, yet will give them direct access to their bank accounts! At least you have some control with the CC. And you also need to understand that for the low-buck outfits to make it, they can't be bothered chasing people for payment. That's why they require the CC payment. Even writing a check requires someone to process it which costs money....See Moreno DSL internet service?!
Comments (37)Try contacting Verizon or Sprint in your area and get a wireless card referred to as "Air Card" they sometimes work in areas where DSL service is not avaliable and you can take it with you anywhere (love mine and get transfer rates of over 1,000kbps - test speed at - http://www.abeltronica.com/velocimetro/pt/?idioma=uk&newlang=uk ) Not easily networkable though if that is something you are trying to do. We got sucked into Hughes Net last year and had to spend almost $1,000 to get installed since there are trees around and they could not mount on the house - Its speed is OK faster than dial up and works 90% of the time (sometimes rain or cloudy days kick it off) Transfer speeds not even near what they tout on TV. I would only get Hughes again as a LAST resort - you have to get an 18 month minimum plan and it really starts to rack up especially if DSL service may be available to you in 6 mos or so. (You can cancel early for a fee.)...See Moredo any of you have wildblue internet service
Comments (4)I'm sorry I didn't see your thread asking about those of us in the rural area the other day. Scroll down in this thread to read of my nightmare with them. Wild Blue ISP-Beware! You might also want to check out some of the links below. Remember...you will be signing a contract saying you will pay them each month (for a year even if you don't have service. But...if you are out of service for 10 days (and have been able to report it right away) they will give you 10 days credit on your bill. Though the equipment is under warranty for a year, if it goes bad after 90 days (or needs adjusting) you will be charged $75 per trip....that is if you can get ahold of repair service to report it. Would you mind being on hold for over an hour waiting for a voice to take your call? It seems the only lines they have manned enough are the ones selling their crappy service...even in areas where they do not have repair people enough to take care of any repairs in a timely manner. All the nightmares are coming back now...had best get off here. I wish you all the best if you proceed and get it....sigh I sent the equipment back...might want to keep the boxes just in case, had proof of delivery back to them, and had the equipment charge removed from my credit card. I also canceled my credit card so they could not take the remainder owed on the balance of the contract from my credit card account. I reported them to the Better Business Bureau.
