Adding a screw is the wrong approach. Try this instead: - Pick a strong dowel (I like hickory) with diameter 1/3 to 1/2 the diameter of the broken back. - Clean the ends of the other, unbroken, spindles. - From the top, approximate the angle of where the broken back went as closely as possible and drill from in the middle of the stub down through the bottom of the seat. - Glue the fractured part back on, using epoxy, and let it set up. Glue the other spindles back into their holes; for this you can use regular carpenter's yellow or white glue. - From the bottom run the drill back up through the hole you drilled earlier and into the back spindle about an inch. - Glue a dowel up through the bottom. Let the glue dry and trim off the protruding part.

Thanks to all for you input -- the beadboard is an interesting concept . . . Wizardnm; the wood is birch, the stain is something the cabinet maker calls "wild cherry". I have 8 ft ceilings: the cab is 48 inches wide, the height of the base is 31.5", and there is 16.5" between the countertop and base of the hutch. I think this was a miscommunication b/t me and the cabinet maker -- I told him 18", but I think he did 18" without the counter. Oh, well -- I am not going to fuss at that. I asked for wide edges coming down from the top arch, as the electrician is going to put plugmold on each side -- this is where the phone and cell phones will be plugged in -- it's a mini message center as well. Once again, thanks to all. Electrician comes this week -- let there be light! Then paint swatches go on the wall -- hopefully move stuff back in on Tuesday. Demo on 4/18, move back in 5/18 -- not bad. Not done, but functional.

I thought your room looked familiar so I googled and found an old thread. I think that leather chair will have the same result as the two large chairs you brought into the room--the scale is wrong and it will dominate. You have a very light color palette with simple, traditional furnishings. It's open and airy, while that chair has a masculine dark library feel to it. I think you'd need richer colors and patterns in your room to pull it off, such as a deeper paint, a patterned wool rug, heavier drapes, sturdier tables. That leather chair looks great with the heavy stone fireplace while your furnishings work well with your traditional fireplace. It wouldn't be worth all those changes to me, but you might want to consider some tweaking of a few things to give your room that comfy feeling you want.

I have semi-retired from operating a furniture repair business. I guess I called myself a "furniture repair technician" I've done a number of sets of chairs. In town here there's also one shop that specializes in chair repair. But In general, I'd look for "furniture repair."
