All-in-one PCs
Comments (11)The hard drive problem I described with my Sony computer was the result of a Seagate drive failing. Some, but not all, of the Sony all-in-one models I described had this particular Seagate drive, and it apparently had a problem with the firmware that caused the drive to "brick" [i.e., totally lock up] without warning after months of perfect performance. Although it wasn't a hardware problem, and could often be fixed by somehow re-flashing the firmware if it was taken out of the computer, it was not something the customer could do over the phone. They did a recall and replaced them with another brand that has worked fine so far. Fortunately, I got it fixed under warranty, and fortunately I had backed up the important file contents to another drive. But it's just another illustration of why you shouldn't wait to do a backup. Even new(er) computers can fail, and that even long-time, name brand manufacturers -- like Seagate -- can have big problems. While I was waiting to get the computer fixed, I used my laptop computer to do an Internet search about this drive problem. I found that there were a lot of people with other brands of computers who had bought this drive as an upgrade who had the same problem. Seagate apparently was willing to replace some drives under warranty, but not to un-brick the drives and send them back so people could recover their data. As you can imagine, there were a lot of unhappy people over this. I had only backed up critical files and documents, so for me it was a matter of reinstalling the operating system, all of my programs, and then the files I had backed up. People who trusted in the Seagate name and hadn't backed up critical files lost everything....See MoreFalse ground on plug-in GFCI device?
Comments (10)I tested another plug-in 6-outlet device I had around, and it also tested with what appears to be a false ground. I agree with ronnatalie that those cheapo testers are not particularly reliable as I had one that apparently had one bulb that was burned out and was not detecting reverse polarity. Nevertheless I purchased another one that I believe is currently working okay as by testing various outlets and devices I have determined that there are no burned out bulbs. However, I do not agree that the testing methodology can be the whole problem, especially since the probe tester also shows a ground-to-neutral connection. The thing is that the 2 devices that looked as if they have a false ground are recent purchases, where as older devices appear to be okay. I agree with davidr that there is probably a manufacturing issue, and I just do not trust the 2 devices that are showing a neutral-to-ground connection, especially since every other surge strip and power tap I had around the house tested okay. (And I have quite a few of these.) I happened to have one other 6-outlet power tap that did not show a ground-to-neutral connection, so I decided to use it. If I can find the receipts I may try to return the 2 devices I think may be faulty. In the future I will test every plug-in power device as soon as I buy it and return it if it appears to have a neutral-to-ground connection....See MoreBluetooth dongle on win10 netbook PC?
Comments (12)I use to have a couple of very Cheap Bluetooth Dongles that I used and they worked great. They did after many years of service fall apart! I tried replacing them with more expensive dongles and couldn't get them to work. Snidely is right, kinda hit and miss. I do however think your problem my be deeper. Since the release of Windows 10 there have been lots of problems with WiFi Adapters and Bluetooth Adapters not functioning correctly or not at all. The 2 Acer Laptops I purchased a year ago had Windows 8 installed when I purchased them. I installed Windows 8.1 shortly after the purchase. The WiFi/Bluetooth Adapter worked great in Win 8 & 8.1. Once I installed Windows 10 on July 29th neither the WiFi or the Bluetooth worked. I ended up buying two New Cards for the Laptops and now the WiFi/Bluetooth are working great. My sister purchased the same laptop with the same WiFi/Bluetooth Card, after the Windows 10 upgrade her card works fine, no problems. The funny thing, the card that stopped working worked fine in a different Acer Laptop with Windows 10 already installed!...See MoreUsing "Night Light/Mode" on your computer devices
Comments (7)I don't have any trouble falling asleep, staying awake is sometimes a problem, though. Anyway, I use the nightlight on my PC because I was told the harsh blue light is hard on the eyes. I have Macular Degeneration, and feel my eyes need all the TLC they can get. So the 'night light' is actually a 24 hour light for me. I can set how dark it is, I think the dark peachy orange would be irritating to me. Mine is set to just 'peachy' enough that the 'blueness' is gone. Rusty...See MoreUser
