Need to remove linseed oil from prefinished hardwood
Comments (3)I should add that the renters have already moved out - this was their "last" cleaning effort before departing (oh, thanks!!). We're doing all the work ourselves so we know it will be done right. Just wanted to make that clear before I get a slew of questions or advice regarding landlord/tenant issues....See MoreHow to remove glue from hardwood floors?
Comments (3)Just moved into our new home and discovered glue on hardwood throughout kitchen and tracked/dripped into the great room. Used Mirage Clean to remove it and it worked. First, sprayed the cleaner on an O'Cedar Microfiber Flip-Mop and mopped a small section. Then, got down on hands and knees and did each spot where the glue was. Sprayed some Mirage on a soft cloth (washcloth) and rubbed it on, gently, then scraped the glue off with my fingernail. Too concerned that anything more abrasive than my fingernail would take off the finish. Did the whole kitchen/dining/great room this way. At the end, I mopped the entire area again with Mirage Clean. This product I got from my flooring dealer; I plan to use it regularly for cleaning. No residue build-up. He also said Armstrong products are very good. Took me 12 hours of hard labor, hands and knees, but worth it, as I now have a glue-free hardwood floor and I didn't damage the surface. Twas not a happy camper when I discovered this and I probably could have complained loudly and insisted the builder take care of this. But I wanted careful attention to it, not a quick clean-up. As an award to self, I went out and found three counter stools on sale! Thank you all you Garden Web members. You've helped me tremendously during the building process....See MoreRemoving linoleum from unfinished hardwood?
Comments (14)Okay. I gave up, and called in the pros... They used a professional floor scraper (basically, a large razor blade on a long stick) to get the lino up, and then used a giant sander with 24 grit sandpaper to get the tar up. They also told me that it is NOT asbestos - just plain old tar. After 8 months of me and my neighbor and his friends scraping, scraping, scraping... it took the pros about two hours. It looks AMAZING. I am thrilled. Its only just been sanded - I'm waiting on the matching heart pine I ordered to patch it, and then they'll put the finish on it. It's costing me $1200 for scraping, sanding, and finishing, plus an extra $400 for the patch work (including ripping the 5" boards down to fit in my 3 1/4" floor). The heart pine boards to patch? $38 a box, times two boxes. And to tell you the truth? Totally worth it. And it should be done after three days of work. Three days! I have been up all night every night in the last week stressing about the darn floor - the idiots my neighbor got to work on it (supposedly pros) damaged it, and I was sure it was just ruined. Now I can finally get some sleep. That right there is worth the money....See MoreGetting Tape Residue Off Hardwood Floors?
Comments (10)The peanut butter and veggie oil mixture sounds like a safe bet. It has worked well for me in the past. Another approach is to use WD-40 but you would want to test it on the surface before you go all out. A bit on a rag would be the way to start. I used it on some adhesive residue where my hardwood floor comes up against marble and it worked well and did not harm the wood....See MoreUser
