When to put feeders out Austin tex area
Comments (6)I have two feeders out right now because of the freezes. Yes, everything is dead. You can leave one or two feeders up year round with just a little solution in it for any birds that might stick around. Just be sure to change the solution and keep the feeders clean. We have Buff Bellies that are here year round. Down here on the coast, the spring migration generally starts in late March to early April and lasts for about a month. They move very fast in the spring, unlike the fall when you see larger numbers of them. And some years, I've had large numbers of them moving through as late as the first part of May. I think it has a lot to do with the weather. Check out Birds need our help now! on the Gardening in Texas forum for more information....See MoreNo hummingbirds coming to feeders
Comments (6)Supposedly they are very territorial. When they first migrate, they will feed from any feeder that they can find. However once they establish their territories, the males will become very aggressive during mating season and will chase away the others. I used to have over half a dozen at the same feeder about 2 months ago, and then they started fighting more and more often with each other, eventually resulting in lesser numbers. Now I consider myself lucky if I see one or two a day but when they do arrive, they barely stay for more than a couple of seconds and immediately take off whereas I had some of them literally nest on the thing and spend almost the whole day perched on the wire above the feeder. Now, one of them actually comes to the window almost each time, stares at me for a couple of seconds and then takes off on a hurry. In June, I would stand outside refilling the feeders and have them stay 2-3 feet away from me for minutes, not bothered by me or anything else. I also have a regular bird feeder about 4 feet away from the hummer feeder, and recently I have had about a dozen Blue Jays claim that feeder as their own. They are extremely loud birds (crows, magpies and jays are all in the same family), and they may also be scaring the others away when they show up intermittently throughout the day, accompanied with real loud noise. It is almost time for the hummers to migrate, so I won't bother changing anything this year but next year, I will add more hummer feeders and a large feeder for the Jays about 50 feet away from the other two, further away into the yard....See Morewhen to put out my first feeder?
Comments (11)Hiya masondad! :-) Welcome! Just wanted to add something. I hang my feeders on the overhang of the house, but like you mentioned - they're kinda high to maintain. So, what I did was bought some of those neat ol "S" hooks (that are long) that you can buy at any birding store (or even from Lowes in the flower pot/accessory area). I have about 2 or 3 S hooks linked on each other to bring the level of the feeder down to my level so that I can easily hang it (plus easier to view at eye level). They're attached to one of those round thingies, sorry don't know the name, but it's a round metal with a screw at the end that you can just screw into the wood (the ones that you put hanging potted plants on). Hope you get your feeder up soon and have some visitors. You'll fall in love with them. Keep us posted and good luck! :-)...See MoreHave you put up your hummingbird feeders yet?
Comments (20)They must've remembered from last year Vickie. I believe they return to the same spot every year. I bought a few plants for the hummingbirds. Orchlein's in Republic had hanging baskets of red verbena on sale for $7.50. I got one for my mother and one for myself. Wal-Mart and Lowe's in north Spfd both had annual red salvia on clearance so I got a couple six packs of that too. I couldn't find any 'Lady in Red' like I got there last year. I think they like it better than the common salvia splendens that they always have. Hoping they'll get some in later. If anyone sees 'Black and Blue' anywhere, let me know. I'd like to get one of those. Lowe's had it last year but they were out already when I checked....See Morenicole___
