Pricing Cultured Stone

We are in the process of trying to pick the stone for our VERY VERY large two story fireplace. I have been to numerous dealers, but all are very hesitant to quote pricing, and keep asking who our contractor is. The problem is that we "may" be better off purchasing the stone on own, especially since our contractor has an immediate 12% markup on anything he purchases.

Does anyone have any ideas what Boral Cultured stone in the Southern Ledgestone and Fieldstone should roughly run per square foot? I also cannot decide on a color - the photos of the two colors I like (Chardonnay and Bucks County) vary greatly from photo to photo. We want a stone that has a hint of red in it to accentuate the antique red brick in the firebox.

I also liked another stone by El Dorado Stone called Shadowrock Bronze, but cannot find any good photos of it online.

Any thoughts, comments or pricing info is greatly appreciated!

Prices may vary slightly in PA, but here in the midwest (OH and MI), nonunion rates are approx. $14-15 sq.ft. for cultured stone, and $12-13 for EIFS (dryvit) and stucco. Not sure of brick rates. For union labor, add around 15% to those numbers. This may be obvious, but remember that it's wall square footage and not floor space, so soaring gables and high pitched roof lines which are common in French Country style homes will add to the total cost. This is also true with EIFS and stucco if you have lots of detail around windows and trims. The sq.ft. price above is for average detailing.

Do you have any photos of how you want it to look? I would also worry about the cave effect. We have had a tv ( for movies, not actual tv) over a fireplace in our basement for years but it is a gas FP and therefore the heat can be turned off or down very quickly, unlike a wood fire that burns for hours. If you have a massive Fp I would probably make sure there is a goof layer of heat resistant material above it.

I was thinking the Spa was pretty expensive, the rest was not bad. I have to clarify what the Stamped Coping and Cantilever edge charges include also. I do not know any Gunite installers in the area, I was set on a Liner, but might get a quote for Gunite, it looks like it is not that much more. I was worried about Gunite in New England. Not hard, it just takes a lot of time and patience. I did it with ledgestone which has long narrow pieces and had a lot of difficulty getting the pieces to stick with regular mortar. I switched to thinset mortar and it worked great. Thinset is a little messier to deal with, but it grabs much better. If your stucco is painted you will have to use thinset anyway. A small tile saw will come in handy for the edges where you may need to cut a piece to fit.
