Small Old Garden Roses for Small Gardens
Comments (47)Tenor_peggy , I spray my potted roses with milk and garlic and all the leaves look healthy even the HPs. I accept spraying because just about every plant I have (zinnias, vegetables, etc) have to be sprayed to reduce the pests and diseases. This Fall I might experiment with putting organic banana peels and cleaned eggshells (with a little cinnamon to deter ants) in the pots to see if the thin leaves will become thicker....See MoreLooking for an old rose expert: found rose
Comments (0)This rose was found in an old Tasmanian garden. It has a stem as thick as an arm. Its possibly an older rose. Can anyone help identify it? Comments (4)I'm not sure about Boule de Neige. I'll have to go searching in old catalogs. The rest should be fine. The biggest issue you are going to have is spacing. Hardy roses get *big*. The usual size descriptions are European, and take into account incessant, hard pruning with grafted plants that aren't going to try and take over North America. So do ask about specific, real life sizes. You may find something like Mme. Plantier, though a gorgeous, well behaved rose, is just much larger than you want to give space to. It is used as a climber in England, and here was 6 x 6 in a very tough spot. The other one on this list I"ve grown, Jacques Cartier, we never did figure out how to control. It wanted to go straight up to about 8 ft. Then it bent over. Hard pruning probably would have helped, but wasn't in our maintenance plans....See More2022-2024 MY FAVORITE OLD GARDEN ROSES
Comments (403)SoCalGardenNut, Beautiful La Reine! Yay, 5 blooms! She has tge most girgeous blooms & fragrance! Don’t forget to smell her fab fragrance! That’s so exciting that you have a Mme Isaac Pereire! I draw designs of whete ai wish to plant my rosrs so I can look at the design and know which rose is planted thete when I first plant. I keep plastic labels on them, too, if they have them. Eventually I memorize them. Your La Reine doubds very promusibg with 5 blooms! She has really beautiful blooms! I live La Reine & Isaac Pereire! Berry, A 4ft La Reine is wonderful! I am really thinking Zi want to move mine out of it’s pot! Next spring! My La Reine had about 15 blooms first flush. However a ”larger La Reine” will probably have twice as many blooms!...See MorePrettypetals_GA_7-8
