Design section from the Seattle African Violet Show
Comments (10)I went to my first area convention last March. It was the first time I had seen design. I didn't understand it, some of it I didn't even like. It was later that I learned there was a theme involved and then some of the designes made more sense to me. A couple months later we had a guest speaker come to our violet club meeting to give us a design workshop. It was great. I didn't know there was so much involved and so many rules. I don't think I have it in me to do a design for a show, but in November we all made a table centerpiece design at home and brought it to our violet club meeting. It was fun, there were no rules so one lady didn't even have a violet or gesneriad plant in her design...so I guess that is why there should be rules. They were so different, we decided not to vote on the best one. Thanks for sharing the pics - do you remember what the theme was? tish...See MoreSeattle African Violet and Gesneriad Show Pictures
Comments (9)That was a really special show! As Marigene shows with her pictures, the plants were gorgeous! There was a lot of variety in both the African violets and other gessies. Very high quality stuff! I noticed that there were a lot of varieties that we don't see on the east coast. Or at least I haven't seen them or heard of them. I got to meet Miss Marigene that day, which was a real treat. She also introduced me to a friend of hers that is 90 years old, and she had some pretty nice entries, plus some of the best plants on the sale table. I got there an hour after it opened, so that may have made a difference. There were lots of other people I met at the show; some were friends of friends, some were just downright huggy bears, like Denny. All in all, a very friendly club. I was invited to Marigene's home, (beautiful yard too!) to see how my offspring were doing (great) and she shared some of the things I didn't have. What a good grower she is. Boy, is my violet life blessed.....the Bay State show in Massachusetts on April 19, the Seattle show on April 27, Marigene's house on April 29. Next week I'm going to look for Herkimer diamonds in New York, and plan to visit the Holy Trinity, the Trifecta, the triple scoop - Fay Wagman, Violet Varn, and Lyons greenhouse. Yep, there is a God. Comments (4)Thanks for your great input. I set up a shop light (2 "sunshine" fluorescent lights) over a shelf this weekend. Then tested this out by placing a new potted AV I purchased randomly at Home Depot under the light. Window blinds closed so no sunlight was hitting the plant. After leaving the plant under here for two days (12 hours of artificial light each time) there is no sign of any damage using this method. This turned out to be the perfect solution. No dying or wilting AVs now! If that plant is doing fine right now, I think I can actually move forward with indoor lighting. So this is all great news. I had no idea there was a Phoenix AV club and I will investigate this. Maybe they have a show or sales. Though Phoenix is still a 3 hour drive from me! Kind of easy scanning eBay for the huge selection and convenience of shopping at 3 a.m.! What an addiction....See Moreohio state african violet society show
Comments (6)Cork - When you are making pics - take a notepad - and write name/grower. I always try to make a pic with a nametag - and it is usually detrimental to the quality of the pic. I would like to see at least 2 pics - one of your exibit, and one you liked most. Good Luck Irina...See MoreAnneCecilia z5 MI
