My Town
Comments (18)Thanks again. It is really beautiful in this area. I've been fortunate that ever since I moved to Canada in 1973 I've always lived in a relatively secluded, beautiful place. The first was on Vancouver Island north of Victoria. I rented a log house on the property of a well to do lady and went to her house and cooked 5 nights a week. The house was on the ocean and a world away from Southern Calif. where I grew up. The first house my husband and I bought was on Salt Spring Island. That was a great experience for the time. We lived on a small lake. When our kids were small we decided it was time to move. A friend lived in Salmon Arm and when we visited him, we loved it. No taking ferries anywhere would have sold me on just about anywhere! Paul, we already have a McDonalds, A&W, Dairy Queen, Wendy's, Joey's Only, Dominoes Pizza, Subway and probably others that are thankfully slipping my mind. I call this the lousy resturant capitol of Canada. We are 45 minutes from a slightly larger town of Vernon that has everything except Cost-co. I'm perfactly happy to go there if I want to go to Wallmart or Home Depot but nobody asked me! The planning here is really pathetic. I've often felt that those in charge should be made to actually GO somewhere and see what is done in other places with a shoreline like ours. Where the wharf is in the pictures coming toward you is East. This area between the wharf and the nature preserve has been the subject for controversary since I've lived here. The person who owned the land between the wharf and the nature preserve walk wanted to develop it. I can't really remember what he wanted to do but whatever it was the city wouldn't let him. He was so frustrated at one point he was threatening to put an RV park there for spite. It was already zoned for that so they couldn't have stopped him. Gradually some buildings were built in this area. The first ones were government offices. That's where you went to get your drivers license and file claims about bad tennants. It was so weird. I pictured something like the Steveston area in Vancouver or Monterey in Calif. The vision was certainly lacking. Now there are a couple townhouse developments which are for retired people plus a big very expensive, care facility. The bay is very shallow and the railroad track runs between the town and the shoreline. That seems to separate the town from the shore in a weird kind of way. If you don't have particular buisness across the tracks, you don't go there. The property being fought over for wallmart is West of the wharf. I've been told it's the only spot large enough to accomodate the type of shopping center they want to build. I guess there are 'politics' to deal with no matter where you live. Comments (51)As of October 2012, USDepartment of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Inspection Service, fact sheet for returning travellers: Meat, milk, egg, poultry, and their products, including products made with these materials, such as dried soup mix or bouillon, are either prohibited or restricted from entering the United States, depending on the types of animal diseases that occur in the country of origin. Fresh (chilled or frozen), dried, cured, and fully cooked meat is generally prohibited from most countries. Canned meat is allowed entry, except beef, veal, lamb, mutton, venison, elk, bison, etc., from countries affected by bovine spongiform encephalopathy. http://www.aphis.usda.gov/publications/plant_health/2011/faq_return_overseas_travel.pdf There's another whole section just about pork. France is on the list of moderate BSE risk so even though you're unlikely to be exposed to it while eating in France, you're not allowed to bring canned meat (or any food prepared with meat) from there. I'm not sure why a tin of meat eaten by you here is a greater threat than you eating meat there and coming home with the exposure. It may be more about politics than agricultural health. Or they're worried you'll feed affected meat to someone who didn't know it came from somewhere where they could have BSE. But you can't bring in canned ("tinned") meat....See MoreRetirement Community Like the Villages in FL
Comments (17)We visited The Villages last December & had an absolute blast. As impressive as it looked in all of the literature, their website, in the YouTube videos, etc....you really HAVE to see it in person to get a true grasp of what it's really like. Wow, is all I need to say. The wife had found On Top of the World's website online & wanted to go see it, too...so on the way home thru Ocala we decided to check it out. Not Impressed at all. First of all, it's kind of isolated down a long road from the highway. There's a small shopping area outside of the gate, but at 10:30am on a wednesday morning it was virtually deserted, and I believe that way more than half of the storefronts were vacant. The only way to get inside the front gate is to schedule a tour with a sales rep......which we decided not to do after seeing the ghost town retail area. What we were able to see of the golf course & homes looked very nice & well maintained......but after just coming from the vibrant & alive atmosphere of The Villages, it just didn't appeal to us....See MoreScrapbooking in France
Comments (8)We are not yet thinking to go into scrapbooking business now, but I have 2 friends who try to let to know scrapbooking in our area. They teach and they have many people interested (about 50 ) and it is growing up every day. It is a first step... they had papers on local news and one of them will have a broadcast program on a local radio by the end of march. we 'll had a demonstration day in a craft shop in april, I made my site, but it is still local. It is why we try to find french people in other part of France. One of my friend will organise scrapbooking week-end for people coming outside from Lyon very soon, but we need to have a real scrapbookers community before to do a real bussiness. but maybe things can go very fast. For my own, I keep doing my computer engineer job and scrapbooking at nigth! Thank you for your advice :-)...See MoreGooster
