Poisonous expired meds

Quite by accident, when I searched to find out if my slightly expired B12 shots were okay to use (they were), I discovered that some medications, including tetracycline family of antibiotics, become poisonous at some point after their expiration date.

I thought about this on Saturday when one of my cousins was bitten by a tick and took two doxycycline capsules immediately. I asked her how she happened to have doxy on hand, and she said she kept it around for occasions like this. (We have a history of tick bites.)

"How old is it?" I asked. She said it was five years old.

I looked up doxy specifically, and sure enough, it said it could cause serious kidney damage when expired. I hope I saved my cousin's kidneys.

When I think of all the people who misuse antibiotics, stopping as soon as they feel better and then saving the remainder of the prescription.....

Oy.

This is a Sweat Bee. I refuse to photograph ticks. :-)
