Transplanting datura grown from seed

This is my first year growing datura. I started them from seed and they seem to be doing fine. My question is this, I have read that they do not like the root systems disturbed so when I have been potting them up to the next bigger size pot I have been taking care not to disturb the roots. Unfortunately, several of them had become rather root bound but I resisted the urge to free up the root mass and just transplanted them that way. Is this a bad idea, can they really take some root abuse and I should have loosened up the roots? Thanks for any input on this.
