Here's a pic of some I started in early winter in my south window in gallon pots (sorry for the poor quality). They're only about a foot tall, but as you can see, have lots of leaves, so I'm a little confused and worried about yours losing their leaves! Anyway, I would put yours into gallon pots and cut them back to discourage the legginess. Putting them outside is fine after last frost, especially once you cut them back since they won't have any leaves to get shocked by the change, and then the new leaves when/if they come will be adapted to the conditions outside... the reason named varieties won't pollinate the same variety is because they are cloned by grafting and all originated form one original tree. Therefore effectively are the same tree. Seeds on the other hand are individual offspring carrying different genetics. So near a 100% chance the seedlings will pollinate each other. The down side: Pests will have access to an easy breeding ground. Furthermore the fruit will rot quickly once it falls to the ground. This will happen at a time deer have plenty of other food options. If you plant turnips you will get the desired effect of winter food for deer after the turnip is frozen in the ground and other food getting thinner. But of course turnips are annual. Watermelons is another. Coyotes love them. Another thing you can do is gather acorns and read up on how to store them for the winter, then go around planting them in fence rows or whatever. Oaks grow slow but 50 years after you die wildlife will be eating from your big beautiful trees. Also, you can plant elderberry thickets. those grow from cuttings. google that. If you can't find an Elderberry bush to get clippings from I can send you some next march.

Hello! Oh my gosh, I have seedlings! lol I can't believe I didn't label the cups I put them in. I know one of them was from that corky looking one because I soaked the seed and saw a little white root starting and I peeled off the outer layer. I have three cups and two are up. Two of them had the corky seeds and I am pretty sure I planted a datura double purple in the other. The two that came up don't look the same, so I think I have one of each. One reminds me of a tomato seedling. At any rate, wow I am so impressed and am now going to start a ton more! lol Thanks all for the help and...if you can tell me what the tomato looking seedling is? Does look somewhat like the first two leaves of the datura above. The other seed is just sprouting but the stem looks very hairy. Wasn't that fast? Datura self-pollinates, even before the bloom opens, so you should get an identical plant, though exceptions have been recorded. Brugmansia, on the other hand, often produces plants with traits differing from the parent plant when propagated from seed. In sum, the probability that your Datura will produce seeds of identical plants is pretty good, but there's a slight margin that the new plant will be different. The only demonstrable way of showing the outcome of your seeds, of course, is by planting them.
