Several rare varieties being offered ONLINE @ Hydrangea Farm
Comments (0)Hydrangea Farm Nursery on Nantucket has started selling some of their collection via internet @ www.hydrangeafarm.com. If you have ever wanted Nantucket-grown hydrangeas, here is your shot. I was very impressed with several new/rare/exclusive varieties including: -Macrophylla 'Dixie PomPom' (what looks like a beautiful bloomer) -Macrophylla 'B's Blue' (attractive specimen from Mark Griffith) -Macrophylla 'Grandad' (white mophead discovered in New Zealand) -Macrophylla 'Kasteln' (very vibrant flowerheads) -Macrophylla 'Malarth' (developed at Hydrangea Farm; nice pale purple blooms with good cold hardiness) -Arborescens 'Ryan Gainey' (smaller and very strong derivation of the classic 'Annabelle') -Paniculata 'Phantom' (one of the newest of the Dutch paniculatas) They also have about 2 dozen other varieties like 'Blaumeise', 'Ayesha', 'Penny Mac', 'Limelight', 'Brestenberg' and 'Blue Deckle' that are great plants as well. I found their website extremely easy to use, good-looking, and informative. Check them out, their hydrangea nursery and collection is impressive....See MoreRecommend Variety & What is your most exotic/unlikely plant?
Comments (6)I am currently growing the Boston Pickling Cucumbers. For tomatoes I have Beef Master, Tumbling Tom, Cherry, and Bush. Most folks do not know that Cucumbers require hand pollination or some really strong air movement. I take a water color paint brush and play Mr. Bee. In order to pollinate the cucumbers you need to understand that the flower are male or female. The female flowers are the ones with the cucumbers growing on them and having flowers at the end of the cucumber. The male flower just grows from the stem, and does not have a cucumber on it. I takes a lot of pollination to get the cucumber to grow. Since it is a vine, it is also hard to see many of the flowers. I have a bad back, so I cheat a bit. My cucumber plants grow on a 3 foot high table in 5 gallon buckets. I have a hand made trellis behind the plants that I use to train the vines on. This keeps the vines and flower at easy reaching height. I then take my paint brush and carefully touch several male flowers in the center, then lightly the female flowers in the same area. It helps if you buzz too .... :-). In regards to tomatoes, try placing a good strong fan in front of your plants. It should shake and move them the entire day, especially the flowers. Do not over do it of course and be sure your plants are well supported. I never pollinate the tomatoes by hand anymore, I let the fan do it for me. The cucumbers however need hand pollination. Hope this helps....See MoreSeveral New Ones Today
Comments (7)Like Sherry, I don't usually like orange, but I like Winners Trophy. I say I don't like oranges, but they seem to reach out & grab your attention, so I have quite a few. Like Citrix, I really like the look of it. It was new last year, I'm hoping it does even better this year. I had Wild One once, don't remember it dying, but don't remember seeing it bloom. Increased Complexity is a beautiful color, if I had to pick one color for my daylilies, that would be it. I always like the pattern in Water Drops too. Why did I start picking my favorites of these, they are all wonderful....See MoreDo you collect rainwater for your plants? Call me crazy)
Comments (18)I do collect rainwater but don't keep a lot on hand, so inevitably have to go back to tapwater until it rains again (or if it's winter until we have a thaw). The reason I started doing it was that I noticed my garden plants would respond noticeably to a good rainstorm after a long dry period where they only got tapwater. I mainly saw this effect earlier in the growing season when the plants grew more actively. I am assuming the quality of the rainwater caused this effect but realize the quantity of water may have had something to do with it (rainstorms that last several hours can give a deep watering that you can't get from a watering can). I don't worry about pollen and dirt on the roof getting in the water.... plants grow in dirt anyway so they shouldn't mind it....See MoreJon 6a SE MA
