Plant suggestions for border of roof garden.

Hello PNW Gardenweb,

I've had a great time putting my roof garden together this spring and only have a few more selections to make. The toughest decision is what sort of plant to use as a short hedge to moderate the winds that come pretty consistently out of the West. I'd want something that grows 1-4' tall (or doesn't mind being pruned to that height), can stand up to some wind and dry air, and has a shallow enough root system to be suitable for container culture. I can water as often as the roots need to be happy.

I'm currently considering: Gardenia, Mock Orange, Pacific Wax Myrtle, and Portuguese Laurel. Juniper or some other coniferous shrub might be fine too.

If anyone has any experience growing on their roof I'd love to hear your advice. I currently have a Prunus Mume, Crimson Queen Japanese Maple, some herbs, a dwarf Yuzu, and two blueberry bushes up there. Thanks!
