I think you will be happy with it. From what i see in any appliance with bad reviews is that sometimes a lemon happens. Probably more than it should. Less often with freezers.

Not sure if ours beeps like our kitchen fridge but you can get an aftermarket alarm if the temp goes up...just remember to get the lithium batteries that work for lower temps as well as for your indoor/outdoor thermometers. (i should look at that manual again)

If yours has the door suction that makes a hiss when shut, you have to wait about 8 seconds before it can be opened again...very strong seal.

cc, it wasn't available on several of the models we looked at either, but miraculously it was on the one that was on sale. So, we took it, but it's not a remote alarm, and as I said, it's in an unattached pole barn, I'll never hear it if it goes off. But, it's there!

I don't know how well they work, but you can get freezer alarm gizmos for a reasonable price.

I've had that can't reply thing happen once, and it went away when I rebooted my computer. I hope yours gets sorted out as easily.

Enjoy your freezer. My biggest pet peeve with my chest freezer is keeping it organized. It seems like they should come with moveable baskets that fit into them.

I think that when I cannot post to a thread it often seems that someone else is posting on that thread at that moment. But maybe that is magical thinking on my part.

CC, before you accept delivery on the Frigidaire, I suggest that you go on-line and check the price of replacement gaskets for it.

The reason I'm suggesting this is because I have a Frigidaire professional all-refrigerator...it's only a few years old but the gasket needs to be replaced already. Not a big deal until I priced it--over $100 for a door gasket. Can't find any thing other than OEM gaskets. (or custom made gaskets that can't be any more expensive than that, can they??)

Checking gasket prices on other brands tells me that a new door gasket 'oughta' cost in the $30-$50 price range...

agmss, both of my chest freezers have baskets that go into the bottom, plus baskets that "hang" from the top lip. I managed to scrounge two extra baskets for the big Gibson, with a bit of adjustment they hang there on top. So I put things like my Italian beans, jars of Ann T's green enchilada sauce, bread crumbs, etc. in the baskets, with meat under those. I have a couple of plastic milk crate-type baskets in the bottom that hold berries and fruit. Meat gets stacked under the baskets and the milk crates can be stacked on top of each other. So, if my blueberries are in the bottom basket I can just pick up the top basket, grab a package of blueberries and replace the top basket.

My newest freezer has one basket for the top and another for the bottom. The one on top goes over the portion that contains the compressor, you know, that "bump" on one side of the freezer that's not as deep. They don't want you to stack things on there, so the basket fits neatly over top with a tiny bit of space for circulation.

CC, What fun! For financial reasons I hope I don't have to buy a new freezer but when it happens it will be fun.

With reference to the Baskets/Bins here is a discussion a few years ago on the Organizing forum.

I have an upright freezer in my kitchen. It has an opening in the oak cabinetry that my DH built when he did the rest of the kitchen cabinetry and looks like the refrig opening (match-matchy). Having it there makes so much more sense than one out in the pole barn (sorry annie1992). I also have a chest freezer in the bakery kitchen.

To organize them, I put like things together on the shelves, some in baskets, some not. They are labeled on the outside (plain paper under a magnet) as to what is on each shelf of the upright, and what is in the left, middle, and right of the chest. They do get a lot of scritch-scratch on the papers, but I can finally keep track of all the "just stuff it in there" that may be labeled (like cloudy_christine) from too many years ago.

The labels are: poultry, meat, seafood, fruit, veggies (including onions, sweet peppers, mashed potatoes), dairy (cheese/butter/eggs), finished stuff to reheat, and the additives (fat back, dried herbs, ginger, zest, bread &/or crumbs, vodka). All of the labels include dates - it only takes a minute - truthfully!

The shelf for stuff to reheat is the wisest thing I've done since there's just the two of us and I cook for an army mostly, old habit having multiple children and/or relatives in the house. Pulling out a pile of waffles, bean soup, cooked rice, or ravioli is a god-send when it comes to lunch or dinner time. No stress.

Do invest in a new gasket for whatever you buy new. The freezer will last a long time but the gaskets age and, like you discovered sleeven-dog, the manufactures stop offering them when you need them, years later.

Extended warranty on most appliances are totally worthless. The unit is covered, usually by a 1-yr warranty, so what you are buying is just more money out the front door because it is not going to fail the first year. IMO

Do buy a Food Saver or other air-sucker to preserve your frozen stuff. Even the lowly Mason pint or quart jars work exceptionally well in the freezer. IMO.

Keep a thermometer in it. OF is OK but -10F is better.

If you have a lot of open space in the freezer - stuff it heavily with newspaper or rice/flour/cornmeal/cereal/staples, or even ice cubes in a bag. The less air circulates in the open areas the better to maintain the freezing solid temperature in there.

Congrats on finding the freezer you wanted. I went to Lowes today planning to buy a new, manual defrost freezer in the 16.2 cu. ft. range and came home without one. They didn't have one manual defrost! I will keep searching. However, I did come home with another batch of herbs for the garden and six 5 day old chicks. LOL!

Well, Madonna, you have time to find a freezer before the herbs grow and the chicks get big enough to eat, LOL. Unless those are laying hens, of course! I just started tomato seeds today, and need to pick up a few more seeds at the Co-op.

Nancy, I freeze various things in canning jars too. Our apple cider goes into the freezer because if I can it, well, it just turns to apple juice. Quart jars work great for that, and the green enchilada sauce goes into pints, so does soup. Why? Because I have stacks of jars and not that many freezer containers, so I use what I already have. The only reason that freezer is in the pole barn is because it's the only place I had to put it where it would fit. Our "new" house is a single story, no basement and no upstairs. The big chest freezer and the upright are already in the attached garage. So, when freezer #3 came, there was no place except the pole barn. We had to buy it because I had a big old cow who hurt her back and became hamburger. A 2,000 pound cow makes a lot of burger and since we'd already raised pigs and chickens, there was no available freezer room. We'll probably only use it part of the year, as we use up our frozen foods we'll empty space and then consolidate into the freezers that are actually closer.

Annie, I think I found one at Sears online and will check it out this coming week. Today and tomorrow are bakng days, church tomorrow night then on Sunday, friends are having their 50th anniversary celebration and niece and her two kids are coming down to visit and see the new chicks. Oh yeah, the young man we watched grow up on his parent's place across the road is coming to till up my garden this weekend. I'm going to ask him to help me put together the chicken coop soon.

Chickens are for eggs. I'm one of those people that if I have an animal, it winds up a pet and I couldn't eat it. I have over 50 tomato plants going strong s well as some other veggies. Want to get them out so bad. If we live closer, I'd share seeds. I plan to sell at a couple of farmers markets this summer as well as can and freeze for myself. Have some peas planted in hanging baskets, just for me, and to save space in the garden. Hope the soil dries up enough to get the potatoes and onion plants set out.

Madonna, I started my tomatoes yesterday. I save seeds from my favorite heirlooms and from Elery's beloved pink half runner beans, because I can't buy the beans here or on line anywhere I can find. So, I have to save them.

Sounds like a busy weekend. I do know what you mean about pets. I have cattle that are strictly for meat and I remind myself that they are dinner. I made a pet out of the old Bossy Cow and cried for a couple of days after she injured her back and became hamburger. I have one old Red Cow and when she's gone, there will be no more calves born here, I'll buy feeder steers and raise them for meat only, no making pets.

My laying hens are pets too, but I buy meat chickens specifically for meat and they are gone in a short enough period of time I don't get too attached to them. We always ate the roosters in any given hatch of chicks and the pullets became our egg laying flock. Now I buy chicks specifically for meat or for egg production.
