What's Blooming in Your Garden - a Photo Thread - June 2014
Comments (74)PankajT: So where's your new thread? I think it would be very useful for a lot of people who may hesitate to post, and there's always something new to learn for the more experienced gardeners. As Steve said, you can go to the main New England Gardening page and look at the very top for a link to post a message. Or you can go to the same page and scroll all the way to the bottom past a lot of white space and get to a box that works the same. You don't even have to retype your message since you've already posted. You can use the edit post feature and copy what you wrote here, and then paste that in the new thread. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Back to the blooming thread - I'm getting dizzy with all the beautiful pictures and the succession of new flowers appearing every day! Each garden seems to be on a different schedule, and so is mine. My first daylilies! Hemerocallis 'Orangeman' I just bought a bunch of these on sale this spring from Old House Gardens, and wasn't expecting anything this year (little bitty plants). One of them is blooming already, to my amazement. I love spider-type daylilies. Another daylily, 'Black Eyed Stella', just started also: The first foxgloves/digitalis have started. These planted themselves a few years ago by the rugosa roses and peonies and they match them perfectly, so I've encouraged them to stay. Pink: And white: Viburnum 'Summer Snowflake" is taking off now, while the doublefile viburnum is fading away. The doublefile blossoms are decorating the ground now. The little Calamintha grandiflora is quietly blooming. Along with the little Sedum kamtschaticum sitting next to the cotoneasters and a yucca. Two of my favorite irises: 'Rustler' and 'Beverly Sills' Claire...See MoreWhat's Blooming in your gardne - a photo thread - June 2013
Comments (60)Thanks to all the beautiful blooms. I went out yesterday and got a 1 gallon size Karl Rosenfield peony for $15. It's young and has not bloomed nor does it have any buds. For that price, I can wait! I ran out of time and was unable to put it in the ground today. Thanks to the picture of Claire's Knock Out rose, I went out today and got one for $11.50. It's a left over from last year and very leggy. The woman who takes care of the plants there told me to prune it 'back hard' and 'feed it' once a week or every other week to force it to grow more stems and leaves. Oh, I should have taken a before and after picture. I have to say that it's awful looking right now. After pruning, I re-potted it in a 3 gallon container. I think it will stay in the pot to recuperate and grow. I will plant it in a couple of months. Or, should I just winter the whole pot in the garage and plant it next spring? -Tina...See MoreWhat is Blooming in Your Garden - September 2011 - A Photo Thread
Comments (24)I'm finally downloading the photos from my camera from the past few weeks. But here is what is blooming lately. Yes - it is October 1st, but these were photos I took in the past 2 - 3 weeks. A gerbera daisy - I bought this plant 2 years ago - and it keeps coming back in the pot. Had I known this "tender annual" would survive, I would have chosen a different color! Self Sown Carpet of Snow Alyssum A baby fever few plant I transplanted back in May has now grown and bloomed. The morning glories vines have bloomed profusely over the brush pile. Star of Yelta and Crimson Rambler. I keep Galdiolas in pots on my patio. This year I added some peacock orchids. Both were a total bust - except for this lone peacock orchid that bloomed this past week. It was a surprise to find this toad lily in bloom. It is so near the ground, and the foliage has been eaten by something hungry. And lastly - some type of wild aster growing on the back side of the pond. One of the good things about being behind on weeding - you can find some pretty weeds!...See MoreWhat's Blooming in Your Garden - a Photo Thread - June 2015
Comments (56)Claire, I just took pictures of mine to show you the differences - yes they vary. This is the leaf and flower of the tree in the picture above. It is the unnamed variety kousa from the arborist. I have gotten a few babies, maybe 3, gave away 2, and this year there is another little guy next to mom, but I'll wait till fall or next year. This is a $3 pot I bought from a woman who propagated solely in pine bark mulch. Different leaf and bracts and grows like it's on steroids. This is a transplant from the first picture (arborist tree) which has not yet bloomed - another few years maybe - but the leaves look more like the one above which I 'imported', if you will. This is the one I stumped 4-5 years ago and has bracts that overlap whereas the others do not overlap. And lastly, what may/may not be a rough leafed wild dogwood out back that has struggle for a decade, but produced offshoots which I'm leaving in place. They are too close to the root of a large maple, but they planted themselves there, so let nature take it from here. The wild struggler that I hope someday will succeed and bloom. (that is persicaria polymorpha in the background) There is a Golden Shadows dogwood tucked in in front of the persicaria and this was its best year - until the deer came. I was too late spraying and it cost that poor dogwood a lot of leaves and young branches. (damn) Whatever you have, and who knows, some may be pink tinged, they're a gift and seem happier in full sun. Jane...See Morehomegrowninthe603
