Fields of the Wood had excellent BS resistance in Virginia. Its a gorgeous rose - I was pretty miffed when DH accidentally killed mine. The color is deep & rich and the bloom shape is globular. Lovely.

Crimson Glory isn't a climber, though there is a climbing version. It's an old HT from the era of roses *MUST* be budded to do anything anywhere but the most benign climates. If you can get it budded, first share your source, then understand that it is a short, bushy plant with nodding flowers. A classic, but still very representative of its time and place.

Here are pics of my Cl Crimson Glory (which is on its own roots - I rooted it). I realize our climate here in Nor Calif in zone 9 is quite different from yours, but I really love this rose. Extremely fragrant, all of the time, large velvety blooms, and hardly any disease in my spray free garden

I know Quadra is a beautiful dark red climbing rose.

Those are all so beautiful. I decided on Munstead Wood as it's low and wide and won't get tangled up with the New Dawn which is a monster. I'm planting it in front of the ND.

However, I started looking too late and it's not available at many places. Has anyone ever ordered from the DavidAustin site? They sell "own root" and grafted for the same price; which is better? I have to "check-out" to get the shipping $, so I hope it's not a killer. Viking Queen is hard to come by, as well.

I am not in your zone at all, but I have Munstead Wood that I got from DA in Texas on its own root. Beautiful plants. Great size for own root. Grew to over 5 feet its first year. I prefer own root since my grafted roses reverted back to rootstock. Had to replace my entire bed because Dr. Huey had spread. UGH!

I just ordered Viking Queen from Heirloom Roses.

I just found Munstead Wood from Witherspoon Roses. does anyone have any experience with them? their prices and shipping are competitive.

I've just read many positive reviews, so it looks like it's a good place. However, they don't say if they're own root or grafted. I left a message asking and will report back when they reply in case anyone is interested.

Witherspoon roses are grafted onto Dr. Huey. Anyone know about the DA Tx roses. Should I be concerned? The prices are about the same so I just want what's best.

DA Tx has own root on some varieties and grafted on Dr. Huey on most. You can take your pick unless they are out of stock.

Just thought I'd report back that I went for grafted bareroot Munstead Wood from DARoses as they were sold out of the own-root. They looked really good ( says a total newbie) with lots of roots and no visible damage. I planted them about 17 days ago and just noticed today that one has a BUD developing!!! How is that even possible? They are going crazy sending out shoots and leaves, but I surely wasn't expecting a bud at this point in time! Is this a good thing? Should I leave it on? It would break my heart to nip it, but if it's for the best I guess I would. If it flowers it will be practically as big as the entire bush!

I go out to check on these plants about a zillion times a day and this bud seems to have appeared out of nowhere. I'm pretty excited, obviously so I just HAD to come report back!

Usually people dis bud the little roses to help the roots development. DA sends very large, bare roots with healthy root systems so I wouldn't worry about pinching the blooms. You will have to post a picture. I planted 3 a while ago and they are taking forever to break dormancy!!

I'm psyched about the buds on all my roses, but this one just took me by surprise! I'll definitely post some pics of its development and opening. These plants almost immediately started pushing out stems and leaves. We had a warm spate and I think that helped jump start the growth.Same thing happened to my tiny Viking Queen which I just planted on Sat/Sun. They started sending out feeder roots during their 24hr soak! and then proceeded to push out little stems within 24 hrs of planting!!! I guess they're happy.

I hear you on the breaking dormancy thing. I just planted (2 wks ago) a couple of Aronia I'd kept potted for 1 1/2 yrs and only one is just now sending out a couple of leaves. They're definitely still alive, but slow to break dormancy. The same thing happened last year, but I just assumed it was because they were potted. It must be a fairly northerly species, but meant to do well in my neck of the woods. Delicious fruit.

I've also read that even when the bareroots don't make top growth, they're still growing roots, so long as the soil isn't frozen. I bet when yours get going, they'll take off.

They started sending out feeder roots during their soak!! Wow!! That's pretty cool.

I know! I soaked them in rain water from a downspout. Since those are full of leaves, it must be all the extra nutrients. :) One of those roses, planted only last Sunday, has already sent out a big, fat shoot from under the soil. That was within FOUR days! It's bigger than either of the two spindly canes. I was worried about future growth with the VQs as they were so small, but I think they're determined to prove me wrong.

Update: one of the MW has at Least 14 buds!!! and the other has about 9. I can't see how it can support so many buds at barely 15" tall. The roots were huge, however, so I'm leaving them unless some say other wise. :) Now if only it would stop raining.

K&M has OR Cl Crimson Glory. I'm thinking of getting a couple for a North facing large concrete wall. How big can I expect it to get? Is it healthy and does it drop its petals cleanly? I may post this separately as it's for a different spot than above, ie.vertical and North-facing. It would receive fairly direct sun in the Summer months, but shade after September. Would it be OK to plant a 1 gal pot now? We probably have a couple more months before hard freeze.

Ordered a pair, along with two of the climber Parade. Speaking with them today, was told these own root sale roses are 2-gallons. Would think that size would be ready for planting when received. vasue, I am a dunderhead. I forget that CG comes as a bush, as well. I'm only interested in the CL version, so I immediately think of that. Interesting that you got it to go with Parade because I was thinking of growing the two together. Maybe I'll rethink this, but I really need climbers for this tall concrete wall. I love Rhode Island Red, as well. If it is only the bush form at K&M, I'll probably just wait until the Spring. :(

Given the size of budded Crimson Glorys, this isn't a rose I'd expect to do well own-root. Budded onto fort, it may be spectacular, but that doesn't do us much good.

Mom planted 2 roses in the abbreviated garden of the home we moved to when I was 7. Still remember her & my grandma cutting the tin can pots they came in with big tin-snippers. One was Peace & the other Crimson Glory. Peace showed pretty flowers, but Crimson Glory was strait from Heaven. Still homesick for the mature acre of garden we'd left on the East Coast in our move to the Midwest, that one rose consoled & inspired me, becoming a nearly angelic beloved friend. When we were moving back East 5 years later, my folks promised another Crimson Glory in the new garden (and a horse, too, lol), but that didn't come to pass. Yet I kept the rose in my heart.

By the time I was grown & beginning my own garden, discovered Mom had forgotten its name. Don't think I'd ever known it - simply The Rose to me. Searched nurseries for years trying to find The Rose. Though I grew & enjoyed many roses along the way, the one that began it all proved elusive. Twenty-five years into the quest, I found her again, waiting patiently for me amid rows of roses, my long lost friend - recognized by her unique song & familiar perfume - Crimson Glory!

Yet she didn't thrive in my gardens, and faded away over time. Ordered her bare root when no longer locally available, only to face the same decline. Twice more, from different sources, same result. In that long ago Illinois garden, she grew well. Perhaps these later versions suffered from virus that sapped their strength? This year determined to try again, looking to find her both bush & climbing virus indexed/VID. But when I saw own root CG in the K & M sale for such an enticing price, went ahead & ordered. Not finding any info at K & M on virus indexing, assuming their roses are not. Anyone know? Sue

Love your story. If it does not work again, I would contact your local rose society and see if anyone in your area grows CG. If they do, and are successful, I would ask for a cutting or two to root - it roots easily, as I was able to do that. Mine is on its own roots (admittedly in Northern CA, zone 9), and it does GREAT. Some very popular roses (which CG was for years after it was first introduced in 1935) are said to have "declined in commerce", from being budded zillions of times. So, if you can find an old plant to take a cutting of it, that would be great. Mine is the climbing version (below pic taken 5 days ago - even in our warm climate, it does not get much taller than 8-9 feet). I have read that for this particular rose, the climbing version blooms better than the bush, which is backwards from how it works for most HTs. HMF says that the bush form is cold hardy to 4b, and the climber to 6b, so you should be able to grow either.

I have both the bush and climbing forms of CG. The bush form is extremely floriferous - there is a flush every 5 weeks or so. It does not stop in winter here in zone 10 either. One of my best roses in winter. The climbing form does repeat but not at the same rate as the bush form. It repeats better in Spring and Summer. It has a few flowers in Autumn and none in Winter. The flowers are best in cooler weather. In summer they blow too fast.
