Ikea bathroom vanities and sinks?
Comments (5)Yep, I agree with mayland--we're using cut-down kitchen cabs as our bath cabs (master bath). DH cut them down to 22", we're using a 1/4" plywood backing instead of the backing they come with, and he cut new cam holes (we also glue and clamp). No problem. They can handle any top you want. I was VERY disappointed in the quality of the bath cabinetry, myself. Maybe for a powder room, but never for anything that really gets used. I'm also putting an extra coat of waterlox on the Hallarum doors/panels we got to use on them. We had an extra coat of conversion varnish put on the kitchen Hallarums--it's made them so easy to clean and very tough, but the refinishing guy wouldn't handle such a small job as our bathroom doors/panels :(. So I'm doing waterlox myself. Some extra kind of finish is strongly recommended, IMO--can't hurt, will help. ACTUALLY, I take it back on *one* account: the particular washbasin we're getting for DD's room--it's the one that's open underneath and is all birch. I'm actually going to take the top off and put silestone slab ontop, and a bigger drop in sink. But the rest of it looks pretty sturdy, and I hope the matching tall storage piece will be too (I'll see when Ikea opens close to use in about 30 days! -- we were using one that's about 2.5 hours away, but we won't have to for much longer :)). The actual bath vanity *cabinets* I would not recommend....See MoreNew Bathroom/Addition vs. Bathroom/Kitchen Remodel
Comments (5)thanks to all who have posted so far, especially Eric. We can probably save/budget down the road for a kitchen redo, or do part of it ourselves. Additions would be a little harder for us except finish work (floors, tile, etc. Can do drywall even but would need to find time to do it). What that kitchen has is a U shaped layout, not too bad except there are overhanging cabinets between a small dining/family space and the kitchen. It's a counter/pass through kind of setup where someone can sit at stools and talk with the person in the kitchen....except the cabinets hang down so the person in the kitchen has to look under them. We would likely tear those out and relocate the stovetop to the perimeter wall and make that pass through an island. Then that entire space could become kitchen/dining. It is possible we could still move out a wall on that (kitchen) side of the house down the road too, we are in Hawaii so all the construction costs are much, much higher than mainland. So jealous of all the posters here who can put on a large extension for less than 50K. Plan A or Plan B will cost us about the same. We don't plan to sell and move anytime soon, but should we need to we're leaning toward sq. footage instead of just extending current bath and upgrading the kitchen. Our neighborhood is about 20 years old so people are beginning to redo those rooms as the fixtures and appliances are ageing. We redid all the appliances about three years ago with stainless finishes, new faucet/sink, and redid the countertop Corian, so the kitchen is livable - just need to clear out some clutter and make smarter usage on available storage space. We could paint or restain the cabinet doors to freshen it up. A few neighbors are creating the "big bang" kitchen now but I'm not certain a 70K upgrade will improve the value that much as a new neighborhood is planned about 5 miles away within the next couple of years. Would we love to live in a "WOW" kitchen, of course. But as with most people we have to make a decision on where it is best to spend the money for now. We could feasibly also add on a 2nd story in future years, but we prefer the single story and if we age-in-place as planned, the new bath will include wide accesses and no-curb shower....See MoreKitchen cabinet used as bathroom vanity?
Comments (14)As kitchenobsessed mentioned, many of the cabinet companies offer bathroom specific cabinets. They may be slightly different in specs than the kitchen cabinets so just check the specs. I also used "bathroom base cabinets"from Schuler in my kitchen to create a hutch. I wanted 21" deep base cabinets and the bathroom cabs came in 21 and 18" depths so they were perfect and I didn't have to pay a custom fee. Same height and door styles, etc as my kitchen cabs. The only difference was that the shelves inside were only 1/2 shelves....See MoreIkea bathroom remodel
Comments (5)Are you talking about the Sektion kitchen cabinets or the IKEA bathroom cabinets (Godmorgon or Hemnes, usually)? We did Hemnes bathroom cabinets in our master bath last year and are waiting on contractor to start work on kids/hall bath that will have Sektion kitchen cabinets as vanity. We are doing a Corian countertop from a local fabricator and will "install" cabinets ourselves since it's a straightforward run of base cabinets. Cost is the cabinets you choose, countertop (obviously varies based on size/material) and plumber. We are doing a long double sink vanity of 102" with three banks of drawers and two basic door cabinets (might add an inner drawer at the bottom of the sink cabinets later if there is room after plumbing). Cabinets/handles came to just under $1,000 and Corian counter with integrated sinks came to about $1,250 installed. I think our plumbing charge for moving the drains to fit the new configuration and installing the new faucets/sinks is $950 (but that would have been the same with any vanity). I hope we like it but won't know till end of May! Make sure you have the room for the greater height and depth and be prepared for an adjustment period where it will probably look too big. Think through your sink size and placement - I think we are going to use more of the extra depth behind the faucet vs front of the sink. Height is going to be great for my 6' son; little children would need to use a stool at any part of the range of adult size vanities anyway. Our vanity has one side in a corner so there is always an option for a retractable side makeup mirror for any future need for "closeups" (greater depth makes it harder to lean in at the mirror). We've had two IKEA kitchens and greatly appreciate the style and sturdiness of drawers and soft close doors, etc....See Moresheloveslayouts
