Kitchen cabinet used as bathroom vanity?

I posted my question under the bathroom forum, but that doesn't seem to get as much action as this Kitchen one does.

I am thinking of using the same cabinet style and color as my new kitchen cabinets, and just adding legs to it to make it look more like a piece of furniture. My bathroom is off of the kitchen.

Has anyone done this? I was originally going to look for a vanity in maybe some antique or bathroom stores, but then thought this would be the easy way out (and also make the bathroom flow better with the kitchen).

If anyone has done this, would you mind posting some pics? I would love to see some cabinets used as a bathroom vanity, just with legs attached.

I used kitchen cabinets in my master bath. The only thing to remember is that they are a little taller and deeper than your standard bath vanity. I don't mind it, and I'm only 5'4" but some people may think it feels too tall or not have the space for the depth.

It's not uncommon, especially in families with taller people. We used standard kitchen height cabinets - not necessarily "kitchen" cabinets - in all of our bathrooms. Two of the four bathrooms have the same cabinets as the laundry room. All bathroom cabinets are on feet. My installer cut off the base of the cabs when they arrived and bought extra stain/glaze from the cabinet company (Jim Bishop Cabinetry) so it would match.

We have a powder room off the kitchen with no cabinets, so they don't match the kitchen. The kitchen cabinetry was custom. Below is a link of three of our bathrooms. I also used two three drawer dressers with bookcases sitting on top in our master closet. They are on sep. walls and also on legs.

thanks to all who have posted so far, especially Eric. We can probably save/budget down the road for a kitchen redo, or do part of it ourselves. Additions would be a little harder for us except finish work (floors, tile, etc. Can do drywall even but would need to find time to do it). What that kitchen has is a U shaped layout, not too bad except there are overhanging cabinets between a small dining/family space and the kitchen. It's a counter/pass through kind of setup where someone can sit at stools and talk with the person in the kitchen....except the cabinets hang down so the person in the kitchen has to look under them. We would likely tear those out and relocate the stovetop to the perimeter wall and make that pass through an island. Then that entire space could become kitchen/dining. It is possible we could still move out a wall on that (kitchen) side of the house down the road too, we are in Hawaii so all the construction costs are much, much higher than mainland. So jealous of all the posters here who can put on a large extension for less than 50K. Plan A or Plan B will cost us about the same. We don't plan to sell and move anytime soon, but should we need to we're leaning toward sq. footage instead of just extending current bath and upgrading the kitchen. Our neighborhood is about 20 years old so people are beginning to redo those rooms as the fixtures and appliances are ageing. We redid all the appliances about three years ago with stainless finishes, new faucet/sink, and redid the countertop Corian, so the kitchen is livable - just need to clear out some clutter and make smarter usage on available storage space. We could paint or restain the cabinet doors to freshen it up. A few neighbors are creating the "big bang" kitchen now but I'm not certain a 70K upgrade will improve the value that much as a new neighborhood is planned about 5 miles away within the next couple of years. Would we love to live in a "WOW" kitchen, of course. But as with most people we have to make a decision on where it is best to spend the money for now. We could feasibly also add on a 2nd story in future years, but we prefer the single story and if we age-in-place as planned, the new bath will include wide accesses and no-curb shower.

Lovely! I like the classic white tile and porcelain and how you used furniture pieces in the bathroom. I love that the storage at the end of the tub has pull-outs that can be reached from the toilet. Your custom sink and backsplash and counter are unique and beautiful. Yours may be the first bathroom sink I have seen in which a small or medium dog could be washed! That is a good thing! I showed your pictures to my DH because I am thinking of classic tiled walls with a chair rail for when we redo our bath in a couple of years. He liked it! I was expecting him to say, "too old fashioned." He did not, he said it looked nice. From him, nice is a compliment. He even liked your rows of listello. I was just at the Tile Shop's site the other day looking at the Hampton tiles because someone was selling some on Craigslist. I am hoping to do as you did and get what I can cheaper there, and fill in the rest from the store. I can see that you worked very hard to secure all of your materials - and then cut the floor tiles to size and culled the Hampton tiles, too! You succeeded very well in getting the look you wanted while saving money along the way. Congratulations, and thank you for the pictures and great detail and supply list.

Does it impact the clearances to other fixtures? You've got to have at least 24" in front of a vanity to be able to move by code, but in real life, that seems pretty cramped. Be sure you don't feel cramped, especially if this is a master. A less than spacious feeling master can impact it's usability now, and negatively affect resale. Are you planning on doing a stock sized top, or going custom? In your case, since you already planned for having varying depths, you'd be doing a custom stone top anyway, but for those who want to save a bit of money, you cannot use a stock vanity top with kitchen cabinets. Are you OK with the taller height as a vanity? The trend is towards choosing taller vanities, but not everyone is OK with a sink basin for washing your face at 36" instead of the shorter 32". Are you OK with the added expense? Vanity cabinets are slightly cheaper than kitchen cabinets, and this can make or break some tight budgets. With you already planning on using so many drawers, this won't be a cheap project from the beginning, so that's an unlikely scenario for you, but it can be a consideration for others who might read this.

I also have a kitchen cabinet in my bath. I'm tall and appreciate the extra height, but I don't think this would be a good option if the bath is used by children.

We didn't necessarily use kitchen cabinets in the bathrooms, but we had all the bathroom cabinets (except the master bath) built to kitchen height. We didn't do it in the master because we used vessel sinks on top of the vanities.

I wanted kitchen height but not depth in the master, but my contractor had my CUSTOM CABS cut down to standard height thinking that it was a mistake!!!

AAAARRRRGGHHH!!!!

I am on my way over there now to see what can be done....

We did this but adjustments had to be made for the increased depth. Standard bathroom countertops are not deep enough. We had a simple shelf made to hide the gap, which turned out to be one of the most useful things we did in the entire remodel!

We love the extra height it gives. Even my 5' mother liked the taller height, which surprised me.

Brookhaven makes both kitchen and bath cabinets. I needed a pantry-type cabinets that were three inches shallower than standard kitchen cabs, so was able to order them without paying a custom fee. Their depths come in three-inch increments, as are widths, I believe. Height may be the same way. Don't assume kitchen places/people know about bathroom cabinet lines. The first two Brookhaven places I went to did not. Hope this helps.

As kitchenobsessed mentioned, many of the cabinet companies offer bathroom specific cabinets. They may be slightly different in specs than the kitchen cabinets so just check the specs. I also used "bathroom base cabinets"from Schuler in my kitchen to create a hutch. I wanted 21" deep base cabinets and the bathroom cabs came in 21 and 18" depths so they were perfect and I didn't have to pay a custom fee. Same height and door styles, etc as my kitchen cabs. The only difference was that the shelves inside were only 1/2 shelves.

Thanks so much Kitchenobsessed (and everyone else)....we are getting Brookhaven cabs for the kitchen and I asked our KD about using another one for the bathroom and he did not mention this at all to me.
I know we need one 36 inches across, but what is the standard size for depth for bathroom vanities?

I used a kitchen cab in my basement remodel, I'm just ok with it- doesnt look as furniture as I'd like.

I am doing first floors now, and debating using cabs or trying to find an antique dresser to convert for something interesting.

Standard bathroom vanity depths are 18", and more commonly 21"--the raised height vanities tend to be 21" deep.

You can definitely work with Brookhaven either way. For me it was putting 21" deep cabinets in my kitchen island and 13" deep (their standard upper cabinet depth) up on a toekick for the back of the island.

my bathroom cabinet is kitchen cabinet height and I hated it. Because the cabinet is high so is the mirror. I am short. Need I say more?
