Question about thermostat needed for new HVAC system

Have gotten a couple of proposals for replacing old gas furnace and central air for a small house, both from Trane dealers. Both propose 60,000 BTU XV95 2 stage furnace with variable speed, but one proposes Trane XR16 A/C and the other Trane XL16i. What puzzles me is that the guy proposing split system with XR16 (at much lower price) is also proposing a Trane thermostat Model Focus Pro 402. Though his proposal says this t-stat is "2 stage programmable," the Trane website says the XR402 (which is the only "402" thermostat they market) is NOT programmable. DON'T I NEED A PROGRAMMABLE THERMOSTAT TO MAKE FULL USE OF THE XV95 FURNACE (2 stage, variable speed)? And the other guy, with the much more expensive total proposal, includes a Trane XL950 thermostat, which is their top of the line, super-programmable, WiFi connection unit that seems to do more than I need, CAN ANYBODY HELP ME UNDERSTAND THE PROS & CONS OF THESE OPTIONS?
