Backsplash & Hardware Suggestions for IKEA Grimslov Kitchen?
Hello All -
I was wondering if I could gather some ideas from you folks. My husband and I are getting close to finishing our kitchen, and I need to make some decisions on the backsplash and hardware.
Our countertops will be Caesarstone Quartz in Nougat. Our walls are painted Sherwin Williams Silvermist. I have my stove already (SS) but not my other appliances. They most likely will be SS, but I wouldn't rule out white for the fridge or dishwasher. Our sink is a white drop-in and I have a faucet in a chrome finish. Our floors are a 5" natural hickory and the blank corner wall will have three wraparound shelves in a wood species yet to be determined - but most likely stained dark.
I have purchased a 3 X 6 matte white subway tile by Daltile for the backsplash and Ikea's faglavik knobs in black and their fagleboda cup pulls in black. I can return these if I need to, so I'm not afraid of changing at this point. We're moving slow anyways.
I guess my questions are:
Would you do a full backsplash?
If I used the tiles I have, will it be too much white?
And what about grout color? White? Light grey?
Would a 4" or 6" backsplash look better?
Can you even get an integrated BS in Quartz material?
Would a different hardware finish look better than the black? Satin nickel? Chrome?
What about the quality of Ikea's hardware? I've had some Amerock in the past I have been pleased with. Would handles function better than the pulls?
Thank you in advance for any suggestions...it truly is appreciated. I've tried bouncing some of these ideas off my husband, but his eyes just start crossing and rolling back into his head. He's just no help here. Thank you!

Comments (38)"Vision" is a kind way to put it Igloo! There was something about the house that pulled us in when we saw it, despite the total lack of curb appeal and the hideous kitchen, bathrooms, living areas, garden, etc etc. Flyleft, yes, wine above the fridge (required to give us the "vision"). I know its not the best place to store it, but we're not talking long-term storage here! The wine fridge has "good" wine (1 bottle of) and a couple of beer bottles but is mostly full of Pellegrino water. Your DD is getting a very thorough education in "Advanced Remodeling", she will be ready to graduate soon ;) Soigne, we got the L-brackets at Lowes. i think they were in the hardware area (not the shelf bracket aisle, those were not heavy-duty enough). they were very cheap, maybe $10 each. Dgmarie, I don't know whether the pendant lights are code. I do know i have seen other pics on here of pendants hanging over sinks, which doesn't mean that its code of course. My DH installed them (and the undercab lights). They each have their own box in the cabinet right above the pendant, so if they somehow fell, they would cut out. But i do not know if its code -- anyone else know? Mystery, we like the fridge but wish we had gone with the french-door version you have as we didn't think about clearance between door and island -- there is not too much space to get round the door when its open (at least not for me, but thats another topic!). Yes, I agree the freezer is annoying, but i suppose all bottom-freezers must be similarly so. I do prefer having the fridge on top as we are not huge freezer-users, so for us, the frustrations of the bottom-freezer are worth it. The cooktop is fantastic, my DH researched and bought it and I'm very glad we went with induction. Comments (15)Since Encore tiles are out of my price range, this is on my list of companies to get samples from once I pick my stone slab. If you like crackle tile, I think you get the most variation; however, other ceramic tile finishes have slighter variation to them. Blue Frost crackle is one I am very interested in seeing since I favor bluish grey tones, but there are some others that would "play" well with turquoise. Comments (15)just white subway..find one you like. What stands out is the top of cabinetry with wall space and color above. The backsplash is proportionately insignificant in terms of area. I wouldn't squeeze a lot of contrast in there. Just a good white subway with some characteristic that you are attracted to. Comments (8)oh god, please, no standard white subways. if any kitchen could get away with more of a modern black or black and white tile, it's yours. You don't have a ton of backsplash area AND you already have a lot more white. I think w/as high as the ceilings are, you could easily do a dark splash. I'm considering these for my own splash. the Nickel Black from Seneca tiles. (they come in a fan and smaller herringbone shape too) Encore Ceramic 'kiss' hex. comes in many diff glaze options, tile size, http://encoreceramics.com/product/hexagon-3-5-cookie-dip-mosaic/ they also have a larger chevron in alloy/iron glaze this one is Clayhaus hex dimensions in shades of black glass I like the matte black geo design option w/white grout, or the black pickets Tilebar Harliquin and I think the gold pulls w/gold lights would look great w/the flooring. it's warm. 8 years agolast modified: 8 years agoSilvermist looks beautiful in your space, as do the cabs and the counters. You must be very excited. One thing missing from your white Daltile choice is contrast.
You can add a little contrast by picking up on the grey in your counters, or playing off of the blue of the walls. These are Fireclay Tiles in Moonshine, Nickel, and French Linen, all three are in the Foundations line and sell for $15/SF.
Just by the way, I recommend Fireclay Tile a lot. They are gorgeous in person, and their web site is highly accessible, but I'm not affiliated with them in any way. I'm sure Daltile does not make glazes in these colors, but they might have something....close enough, and more affordable.

8 years agoI just wanted to answer your question with regard to the ikea hardware. I just did an ikea kitchen using faglavik knobs and handles and I was very pleased with the quality for the price. The knobs are only a dollar each and they have a nice finish and heft to them. I have to say though that I don't have experience with higher end hardware, so I can't compare.
My only complaint is that I think the knobs are just a liiittle small, but I don't think it's super noticeable.
