Critique my kitchen plan please.
Having trouble using the design software so can't see this in 2D Not sure of cabinet sizes, distances ect. My kitchen is gutted and is windowless. All plumbing can be re routed. The island isn't built yet and is totally open to the dining room and living room. Thanks in advance

Comments (19)We used to have a double oven range like that (small on top, large on bottom) and used the small one all the time. With the amount you cook I imagine you'd use both. but you really have plenty of space so I don't think you need to get rid of the oven stack all together - imagine that your range / cooktop could go on the garage wall where you currently show the ovens next to the pantry. The pantry gets moved to the other wall so that space where the pantry currently is becomes a countertop corner, and you end the run of cabinets with the oven stack next to the door into the school room. This puts a nice run of counter top between 2 stacked elements at either end (fridge and oven stack) which I think would further visually encourage pass-thru traffic to stay on the far side of the island, but would still give you lots of prep area (for baking / oven based items I'd imagine) on the school room side of the cooktop. Basically you'd be almost flipping the positions of the cooktop and ovens (sliding them slightly to the right so they line up with the end of the island.) As for exactly which ovens, I think you've got lots of options - it's just the question of which combination works best for you / your family. From your description it seems like you might be best served with 2 larger ovens. In my Mom's kitchen she has a double oven with the microwave above it and it works out fine although it does put the microwave at a slightly awkward location, though that may work for you if you only rarely use the microwave. If you want the microwave to be lower instead for kid access you could do one oven and a microwave in the oven stack, and then put in a range rather than a cooktop to give you that 2nd oven. This could be a great solution for 2 reasons: (1) allows you to have the primary oven in the oven stack at a comfortable height, (2) gives you a second full size oven for larger items / etc, while allowing that oven to be under the vent hood for cooking items where that is beneficial. And a further option you could consider if you really simultaneously cook a lot of items at different temperatures would be to make the wall oven something like the GE Single/Double - along with the range this would give you 3 ovens of different sizes, with 2 fairly large size ones....See MorePlease kindly (or ruthlessly ) critique my kitchen plans
Comments (60)You better go easy on your neck or your going to give new meaning to "kitchen rehab" Yes, It is induction and I do really like it. It took some getting used to and there are pluses and minuses. A minus being that sauté pans sometimes move a bit when I stir them unless I'm are holding it with the other hand. I know that sounds silly and something I wouldn't have even thought of, but it just takes getting used to. Another minus is juggling pan sizes a bit so that they will fit on the "burner" circles. A big plus is that even my not terribly expensive pans cook beautifully and ultra evenly because the heat is so well distributed. I love how easy it is to clean up. No more heavy grates to remove and scrub. Stuff really does not bake on the cooktop at all. I can wipe it totally clean in 10 seconds even after a long day of cooking. Also, love how I don't get hot standing in front of it. There is just so much less heat coming off it. It think this will be a big plus in the summer. Yes water does boil fast and that's nice, but even better is how it holds a very low even simmer. My gas range always seemed to simmer too high....See MoreCritique my kitchen plan please
Comments (76)You know....for a brief period of time in our last remodeling process, we had 2 dishwashers. It was nice in that there was almost always an empty dw waiting to be filled. But, it wasn't "all that" that I thought it might be. I found trying to load 2 dishwashers cumbersome. I had to try to jockey the contents between the 2 for the best fit, which could be time consuming. I'd get frustrated and think, "I could have washed this by hand and been done by now!" If both dw's were run at once, it seemed like a huge task to get them both emptied. My little kids, who were normally delegated to the duty of loading and unloading, could no longer do the task. It was overwhelming to them. Hey, some days it felt overwhelming to me! Then we got to planning this remodel. We planned for 2 dw's again. Cabinets needed to go in and our sink needed to come out. We moved the entire kitchen operation to the family room. We were washing dishes old-style, in dish pans on the table. One person washed, one or two dried and put away. All of a sudden, cleanup became this efficient, no big deal task (except for late night dinners when we were all tired.) "Why did we think we needed a dishwasher?" we contemplated for the first few weeks. Well, that style of cleaning lost its newness, and we came to the point we'd be glad to have a dw to stick stuff in and walk away, but we still enjoyed the camaraderie of working together. Pretty soon it was time to install the sink and counters in the new kitchen. We only had one dw in our possession. We started the process of looking around for a second one while we used the one we had. Life went on. We were functioning fine with one dw, usually running it a couple of times per day. It meant we had to hand wash some stuff, but a lot of these items were over-sized to match our big family, or they were hand washables anyway. It also meant the dish draining rack took up permanent residence on our counter. The hole for the second dw was "temporarily" filled with our trash and recycling bins. We love the convenience of tossing the trash and recyclables in their containers right next to the sink where we are processing them. We came to the conclusion that we are just fine with one dw. It loads and unloads quickly and easily. We wash the hand washing stuff with little fuss. I'm not crazy about the dishes drying on the counter, but it's a kitchen and that's part of what kitchens are for. Our kitchen is medium sized, and the storage is more valuable to me at this point that the second DW. We plan to do a pull-out in the 2' opening. If we change our minds later, a DW can still go in there. You may feel differently. Som families even half our size love having 2 DW's. 8 years agoThanks for your interest. Not knowing common cabinet sizes I tended to make things wider figuring I could always put spacers in if needed. And no we are on a tight budget so no custom cabinets here. We want to make the island with base cabinets if possible. Wish the island could be longer but it's all the room I've got. Adding an online rendering of the whole house that took me hours and weeks to build. I've now given up on this as it's just beyond my computer skills. The room with the X is the kitchen area.

counter beside the fridge, but no water source, and water on the
island, but very little prep space. In this layout, someone can be
loading or unloading the DW without interfering with the prep and
cooking.
How wide is the aisle between the pantry and island? How deep is the island overhang?

8 years agoThis is a sketch of the whole house with dimensions for each room. The doorway into the laundry room is 36". Let me know if you have any other questions. I've been pouring over all the info you all have posted and I thank you so much.

8 years agoI have a few alternatives for you.
I indicated cab sizes, but I'm no expert so these may not be the actual sizes you can get. There are various things that can affect the sizes. To name a few that I'm aware of: fillers/spacers b/w cabs or cabs/walls depending on the type of cabs/decorations you'd be using, 1-1,5" wide panels on the sides of the fridge, at least 3/4" panel to support the countertop if DW is at the end of a counter, size of door/doorway trim you'd have.
If you have a counter depth fridge or recess the fridge into the garage/office you may gain about 6" in front of the fridge.
The first 3 alternatives are galley kitchens, 2 with island and the last with a peninsula. I have cabs behind the island/peninsula but if you'll have seats, I'd make sure to have 60-65" b/w the edge of the counter to the nearest furniture since traffic would pass behind those seats.

It would be good to have the fridge on the side where cook(s) won't be disturbed by anyone else using the fridge.These two layouts do not seem to give you much storage and counter. Tray storage above the fridge can be something like this.
