climbing (rambler rose) shade tolerant

Hello!! I am going to start monitoring my house for how much sun it truly gets, but I know at 2p it gets dappled sunlight. I am looking for a climber that puts on one big show (some sporadic blooms later on would of course be a plus!). I loved cupped blooms and pastels (apricots and soft pinks). I don't know if it has to be a rambler, but I also don't know how hard that term is when I am finding ones that have the look I want for my zone (6b).

Ideally, I'd like 2 different contrasting ones (one pink, one apricot) to go up 2 corners of my house.

For now I'm going to say it doesn't get the full 6 hours of sun, but will pay close attention.

I've seen that eden and a shropshire lad are shade tolerant. If I have to sacrifice continuous bloomers instead of one big show, I'm open to it. I just really would like to get something going for my bland house. (I'll be adding window boxes and shutters as well)

Most traditional ramblers would engulf your house in a few years. They usually bloom abundantly once a year with some giving later blooms. Perhaps what you're thinking of are climbers with flexible canes that produce many laterals (flowering branches). You're in White Plains, NY, your USDA zone is 7a, so you can choose from a number of climbers that will be cane hardy with little lost to cold. Figuring out how much sun & shade your planting area gets is a little tricky, but pretty much essential to picking the suitable roses. What direction does your house face? Draw yourself a rough map with compass points & include any buildings, trees, fences & such that cast shade during various times of the day. Since the sun varies in angle & intensity through the year, look up your latitude to help you guesstimate sun exposure during the growing season. i called my new favorite rose dealer (based on website and most excellent customer service) and ordered eden and abraham darby. they even said they have a 1 year guarantee!!! so with 10% off and free shipping I figure I don't have much to lose!!! Gonna just dive in and go for it and see what happens. They'll ship in mid april. Any tips on the best way to train it up the brick walls? O:)

Dont have Eden. I grew Benjamin Britten a long time ago - I think it needed more sun - grew octopus arms and didnt bloom that much - dug it up and potted it, it must have died and I didnt replace it. I have tried 2 Alister Stella Grays - they were both teeny tiny plants and didnt thrive, but I hope to get a bigger plant and try it - heard good things. I have a Crown Princess Margareta - ordere last year, potted for awhile, planted in the fall. Its growing well, am seeing a couple of blooms. So far....I like it. Re Austins - new for me this year are England's Rose - it was a new bareroot and just simply covered with pretty candy pink blooms! Wollerton Old Hall hasnt bloomed yet but covered in healthy buds and lots of them. Fighting Temerarie is just starting to open - lovely apricot - very healthy. Abe Darby is a real favorite, got another of those this year - covered in buds. Darcey Bussell just started blooming - lovely! Princess Alexandra of Kent has alot of buds - bush isnt as big as Wollerton Old Hall, Fighting Temerarie, Darcey Bussell or Abe Darby, but healthy and coming on. Princess Anne is growing well, no buds yet. I love the noisettes - ordered a bunch of rare ones from Vintage Gardens - looking forward to getting them to big plants in pots then planting them in the ground - preserving these that wont be available after the Vintage closing. There are so many roses that do well in Texas [be sure and mulch well during heat of summer!] that you shouldnt have a problem finding more than you have room to plant. I have a huge pot ghetto.......and have plans for about 5 more raised beds to hold more. Have fun!! Judith

In the Sacramento cemetery, also zone 9a, DbB gets to about 5-6 feet wide and tall. PM can be an issue but not so bad that I wouldn't grow it (I have it at home, too). Our dry summer heat gets rid of PM although spring and fall can be an issue. We grow it in full sun and varying amounts of shade. Its close relative/sport, Mme Joseph Shwartz, tolerates even more shade. I would not, however, try to grow them as a climber. There is a climbing version in Australia that I'd love to have. Those beautiful,fragrant flowers hanging down from overhead - heaven! We have a climbing White Maman Cochet on the mausoleum in the rose garden that is in all-day full sun with some reflected heat from the granite, and it does fine. Other Cochet roses that we grow get some shade and do fine, so it's a versatile plant.. Great repeat, very vigorous. I remember Sherry enjoying and being a bit overwhelmed by her climbing White Maman Cochet so you'd need some room. There are a few other climbing teas. We grow Dr. Rouges on the cemetery fence - again, full sun, and it gets the brunt of winter's north winds. It's taken a while to extablish but is doing great now. Flowers are salmon-pink. We are Sunset Zone 14 so have some cooler weather at night because of marine influence, but usually have several weeks above 100 degrees. It's never occurred to me that Teas would need shade in our climate but can't speak for Las Vegas. I've lost track of the point of this thread - do you want a shade tolerant rose for that site, and if so, how many hours of sun a day does it get? I looked up Las Vegas in Sunset Western Garden book and think that you get cold enough to provide winter chill for roses that benefit from it. I don't think that Teas need it, however - roses with European ancestry are the ones that bloom better where it's cold in the winter, but perform fairly well in Sacramento. Roses with predominately Asian background (Teas and Chinas) are more winter-tender but tend to thrive in summer heat. Anita

I had forgotten about this thread and wasn't reading it since 'shade tolerant ramblers' is not something I'm pursuing this year, forgetting that this is my thread. The Super Dorothy bands that prompted my original question died. They overwintered beautifully, but the following summer was a scorcher and they dried up in the pots before I got them in the ground. The area they were planned for is still bare, but is not a priority until I get some other areas finished. Summers, your new property sounds like a gardener's paradise. Please keep us posted. Your photos above are beautiful. A 6' deer fence may be adequate for some deer. A little discouragement may be enough, if there are other food sources in the area. My garden was the only source of food for the deer around these parts, so they were determined. It sure won't hurt to try since the fencing was a bargain.

Rosa cantabrigiensis is so lovely. Sigh. And that photo of Climbing Cecile Brunner...!!! I think the slope should only have species roses? What do you think? I've started populating it with some. So far there is a r. canina, r. gymnocarpa & as of about 2 hours ago, a r. californica. Which, from the blooms on it at the moment, looks like it has a very long flowering period. Is this true? Also if what I've read is true, it can get huge. I'm hoping it gets huge. Anyway, those are on the "left hand side" of the slope. I want to add a Stanwell Perpetual near-ish the gymnocarpa because I think the colours look great together. So the left hand side is the pink-y, reddish, apricot side. The "right hand side", the one with the tree in question, facing the infamous robinia pseudoacacia, is more "wild" because it borders a little clump of "forest" so I was thinking of having a bit of a white, cream and yellow theme on that side..... Félicité et Perpétue is still on my list nonetheless, despite its looking "done up and ready for a party" and the likely possibility of spent blooms hanging around too long. As you can see, I did not make up my mind in time for the flower show, and will just have to drive to the nursery to pick it up eventually :) :) :) La Mortola, R. Laevigata, and a bunch of the other big white ramblers are all still on the list too. Here's a shot of the robinia & elm from the back of the garage, different viewpoint. F. has expressed a desire for COLOUR. Only to make decisions even more difficult...

Roses do not stick via little pads to a structure (like boston ivy does) or twine, like jasmine, and don't have twining leaves (like Clematis). They must be attached to something, like a trellis. If there are spaces between the bricks you can look for items called "brick clips", I think you can use string or tape to tie the canes (stems) to the clips. Something like this

hoovb the brick clips sound like the way to go. thank god my husband is "on board" and handy to help me out with these clips!!! only concern is reading about keeping the support 3" from a wall for air circulation. Are the clips a riskier support than can lead to bigger health problems down the road (or up the cane....bad joke...)
