Comments (22)Suri, welcome to the forum. What a lovely garden & adorable dog you have! Looks like Sally Holmes to me, too. http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.5589&tab=1 You can click the tabs across the top of that page (Description, Photos, Member Ratings, Member Comments, etc.) to find out more. You can also click on the name of the poster in each category to find where they garden, since reports from your general area will be more helpful to your growing conditions. Sally Holmes is usually grown as a climber, getting as big as you & your climate allow, but can be grown as a large freestanding shrub with lots of pruning. You might also begin a new post to invite comments, since these older threads get rather lost in the shuffle....See MoreShade tolerant rose
Comments (13)Hello OGRose, I just doublechecked Gregg Lowery's shade tolerant list of plants he has actually personally tried out in 3 hours or less of direct sunlight in his gardens (Vintage Gardens). Moonlight makes his shade tolerant list, as do many others of the hybrid musks. Most of the Earthkind roses need more than two hours of late afternoon sun. They are especially disease-resistant, but are less likely to be healthy growing in that little bit of sun. Even roses with some known shade tolerance don't necessarily have that amount of it. I hate to disagree with your son, but he made a mistake. Most camellias would likely do quite well in your spot. Two hours of direct sun is not a lot of sun for a camellia, and is in fact close to ideal for most varieties, whether sasanqua, japonica, or a hybrid. Three to five hours of sunlight is probably the average good-growing situation for the majority of camellias. A burned camellia in the location you described would be very unlikely, whatever variety you might chose. I've seen postings by two different camellia growers (one in Florida) about the sasanqua camellia "Kanjiro". The one in Florida does splendidly in full sun, as do those planted in a nursery in Georgia (I think the nurseryman is located in Savannah). I have the impression that most sasanqua camellias can thrive with a fair amount of sun, up to full sun for a few of them. Some particular varieties of japonica camellias can take a good bit of sun too, though less readily than sasanquas. That said, partial shade is the usual situation where most all camellias do best. Best wishes, Mary...See MoreHealthy shade tolerant roses
Comments (6)When the spot is not getting direct sun is it in full shade, or dappled shade? I have a somewhat shady rose garden, my roses get a few hours of full sun and several hours of dappled shade. This is only in my third year in this house, and most of my roses are just two years old, but I'm happy with how things are doing so far. I had to move almost all of the HT's to my mom's house where there is more sun, I have mostly shrub roses and hybrid musk roses and they seem to be happy with the conditions. My spring flush is smaller and later than those in sunnier gardens, but my roses look better during the heat of summer when full sun gardens start looking a little burnt. So it's a trade off. These are the roses I'm growing in partial shade, many are taller than 5' because I want them to eventually peek over my fence. They are not all necessarily designated as 'shade tolerant' but they have been tolerating the shade of my garden well. Comments (10)Whoa..my 2 Sombreuil are huge!! I live in Willamette Valley Oregon. They arch over a pergola like structure over an entry way into the patio. Canes over 10ft and it is getting bigger and bigger as for wide..I'm going to have to keep adding trellis' along a wall and the side of the house. It is about 3 years old. I do deadhead fairly regularly..at my peril..thorns..but hey it's a rose!! They get sunlight most of the day. I throw a handful of fertilizer once in awhile and water regularly. In the spring it is smothered with blossoms!! Smothered and very fragrant! It dutifully keeps blooming all summer. Can't remember where I got them..Heirloom? I have a Buff Beauty..Great. Eden..beauty!! Wollerton Old Hall is just taking off....See Morejerijen
